standard setting for distance apart of shaping/glassing racks?

At last I’m getting some side lighting into my shed so I can see what I’m doing and replacing the chairs I use as stands with some racks.  The question how far apart to set the racks occurred in my head.  Maybe Sways has the answer.

Wise
shaper told me that “in the old days” they had issues reproducing
rocker because of sag between racks, especially during glassing.  They
standardised the distance in the thought that at least sag would be
reproducible?  He has racks the same distance apart for any board from 5’ to 12’

What’s your inter-rack distance?

Do you guys use a standard setting for distance apart of shaping/glassing racks?

If you’re using movable racks do you have marks on the floor where you always set them?

I use the Foam EZ racks but I have no standard setting, I move them according to the board I'm making. I know that's not helpful but if you are using racks you are going to build, go ahead and use 5 gal buckets so you can move them around

good luck

“in the olden days” boards had goddamn 2x4’s for stringers, I doubt there coud be any sag, longer boards need more distance apart, if not the board will bounce on the racks when squeegeeing or running the planer out to the ends, all our racks are adjustable

Thanks for the input.  Keep it coming.

Jimthegenius,

For some “in the olden days” is after the advent of the thruster

Just a backayrd hack, but IMO if you’re gonna get serious you really should spend the money on floor mounted adjustable shaping racks. Right away you’ll see a HUGE difference. When I’m ready to glass, I take the racks off & slip my homemade drip tray & adjustable PVC glassing racks right onto the same posts bolted to the floor. HTH

I agree with Bud, I used homemade racks for years and read here on swaylocks that floor mounted racks would help with my shaping and it really did.

I'AM THE BIGGEST KOOK HACKER ON SWAYLOCKS SO I NEED ADJUSTABLE RACKS. HERE'S SOME RACKS I MODIFIED. PRETTY SUPID BUT THEY WORK FOR LONGBOARDS, SUPS AND HIGH PERFORMANCE SHORT BOARDS.

TO THE RIGHT YOU CAN SEE THE MODIFICATION. I HAVEN'T PAINTED THEM YET SO THEY LOOK LIKE THEY WERE MADE IN A TRAILER PARK. HAVING THE RACKS ADJUSTABLE IS A MUST! THE BOARD ON THE RACK IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE NEED TO ADJUST YOUR RACKS. THE BOARD IS 4'6" FOR A GROM THAT SURFS BETTER THAN MOST 30 YEAR OLDS! HES 8 AND WEIGHTS 65 POUNDS AND IS ONLY 4'4" IF THE RACKS WERE FIXED I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO MAKE HIM A BOARD. TURN THE RACK AROUND AND MAKE A 10'6" FOR A FAST FOOD JUNKIE.
