Just came across this interesting article and was wondering if there are any swaylockians who’ve tried it and what they thought of it! I’ve heard of man made standing waves and tidal bores being surfed but was unaware of naturalyy formed standing waves that were big emough to surf. Great fun i imagine and might require some interesting board design!
In California alone, there are more than 9 standing waves on rivers that can are are being surfed by surfboards, kayaks, boogie boards, and even windsurfboards.
American River up E of Sacto itself has 4 of 'em, if you want to check it out.
Carmel River State Park has one in the late winter.
in the “crossing the line” dvd , there is some “interesting” fotage of bruce irons and a friend surfing a man made stationary wave , I guess you would call it , on boards , and then standing up on booger boards[!] …
they jump in takeoff from the “river bank” onto the “wave” …it’s pretty fun footage , I reckon ! [as is the stuff of him briefly on an old single fin ]
Howzit chip, The friend surfing with Bruce is Kamalei Alexander, Kalas brother and the spot is Lumihai river mouth. It’s a dangerous spot that a lot of tourists have drowned at, they get swept out to sea and can’t get back to shore. One spot here that really needs a life guard station. Aloha,Kokua
