Starting first board(s) and order supplies and amounts

All,

Sorry to ask what has already been asked, but I can’t find what I am looking for. I am filling out my order for to start shaping my first board with a friend. We are ordering 1 6’9A, 2 8’3Es and 1 9’4 B. What I can’t find is a standard calculation for cloth resin and other amounts. If someone has a way to calculate this please let me know.

For cloth ((size_of_board x 2) + (3/4size_of_board))/3 = yards of cloth? ( 1 bottom, 1 3/4 top)

Is 6oz cloth too much for a fish?

Is there a resin ,wax or other supply calculations? I am trying to only pay shipping for one shipment.

I don’t have anything so if you can just link my to a previously posted thread that would be great

Thanks for the help

you can probably get away with one layer of glass on the bottom and two on the top. you could go one layer of 6oz on the top and a layer of 4oz.

as for resin if you go epoxy its about 1.5oz per foot per layer.

and with a hot coat it has do with the lenght of a board. a 6 foot board will take a little more then 6oz of hot coat resin.

and then you need a sanding agent. its usualy 1 cc per oz of hardner and 2cc on the hot coat.

i havent glassed with anything either then epoxy but i am sure the numbers are about the same.

garagedweller,

In general, you put one layer of cloth on the bottom and two on the deck. So a six foot board would use a bit over six yards of cloth( a bit extra for overlaps). 6 oz. cloth is fine on any board. It depends on what you like or want. The six oz. will be a bit heavier and stronger. Many use one layer of six on the bottom and deck with a 4 oz deck patch. Others use all six or all 4 oz.

Its better to mix up too much resin than not enough. I am a novice and use about a gallon of resin, lam resin and hotcoat resin, for a six and a half foot fish. You don’t want to be 3/4 of the way through your lamination and run out of resin. Experts use much less. Use suncure if you can get it. It cost an extra five bucks, but is much easier for begginers when laminating. I would figure a gallon of resin per short board and twice that for the long board. Have fun. You’ll be stoked the first time you ride your own board no matter how it turns out. Mike

Hey GarageDweller!,

If I were you I’d go to www.foamez.com . They have a very good selection of materials at a reasonable price. When I first started shaping ang glassing my own boards, I used the Foam-EZ website. Also, check for local shapers in your area. I’m sure that they’s be willing to sell you any supplies for a good price, too! Check the Home-Depot for tools, for they have a wide variety and you can find stuff that is priced fairly low. These items aren’t the top-of-the-line, but they’re fine for the craft of making surfboards. I think 6 oz. glass on a fish is fine, it’ll just be a little heavier. Just make sure that when your shaping you make sure your fish is a little thicker, for more float if you’re using 6 oz. I agree with Mike, don’t hesitate to use more resin because if you find you’ve used to little, you’re screwed. Hey, good look with your board and take your time with it. Good LUCK!

On my first board, 10’6x24" with double 6 deck and 6oz bottom, I used just under 1 gallon of RR epoxy. That is laminating, hotcoat, gloss coat, and some bourd repairs all from 1 gallon.

If you are using epoxy or sun-cure you should not need to mix extra upfront, as if you start to run low you can mix more in the middle. (if you are doing color, you might want to mix a little extra color/epoxy but not mix the hardner will you need it.)

On the 9er you want to do 6x6x6 for sure, on the 8ers I’d recommend the same, for the fish it is smaller to begin with so it would be that much heavier.

The triple 6 will definately be stronger. Check your board width and glass width. You need width in the glass to wrap the rails (laps). On my 24" wide, I used 30" wide glass. Your glass yardage will be about the same as your board length in feet, to account for the tripple layers. Give yourself a little extra to work with.

You may want to put extra glass in the fin area depending on what type of fin system you are using.

sounds like you have some fun shapes planned

Hi there GarageDweller,

The guys on here have given you good advice so far… just from my own experience of my first glassing job this week, I thought I’d offer my 2c.

I glassed a 6’3" fish with 6oz bottom, 6oz + 4oz top. As it was my first glassing job, I tended to be a little messyer than I should have and tended to drop a bit of resin on the floor. You probably want to give yourself a little extra lam resin than you need and kick it a little slower with less catalyst than required.

Read the directions on your resin can for ratios of resin to catylist… The instructions on my can gave the quantity of catalyst to resin for 20 minutes setting time. I went for 3/4 of the amount of catylist and got about 27mins before it kicked… yeh so I was counting  Also, planning of a trial run on a small batch of resin is also good… if you waste 100ml (sorry for the metric) on a test run, it’s better than stuffing up the board.
