Stencilling/hey, feral dave verral!

Say Dave!..last week you said that you used stenciling for some of your art; Was wondering how you make your srencils…ever use frisket paper? spray? (trace and fill [or both])What’s your method? Thanks, eh! T.

hey tom, i use contact or viynl adhesive, its only good for one use, so i source old cheap stuff! http://www.feraldave.com

Do you use the contact adhesive with the frisket? I wasn’t able to successfully use the frisket on foam, even after a good fine sand and I cleared all the dust with an air nozzle. …worked fine on hotcoat though.

frisket?.. please explain. all our stencil work is done on the filler http://feraldave.com

frisket is a semi clear plastic film with an low tack adhesive on the back. It is commonly used for one off masking while airbrushing and is stiff enough to allow for cutting somewhat complicated images. The low tack is necessary to aviod having the mask pull up previous layers of color in multi color images. However, the low tack and porous/dusty surfaces of shaped blanks make it difficult to use artist frisket directly on the shaped blank. The link below shows a (fuzzy) image of a board that was painted using stencils. Out of frustration with artists frisket the stencils for this board (almost a dozen) were made using wide blue masking tape applied to a sheet of glass. The image was then drawn on the tape and the stencil pulled up from the glass and laid on the blank. Blue masking tape is quite a bit more tacky and adhered well. I had to be careful when subsequent stensils were attached to the previously painted surfaces. Too much pressure and the stencil would pull the paint up. The end result was well worth it and this board was sold for much more than a rideable board would go for. And it doesnt even have fins! http://www.concreteanthill.com/art_board.jpg

we use a masking vinyl. we spray a light coat of clear acrylic beetween layers and leaving to dry between colors/layers is very important too. this image is done with three masks/stencils http://feraldave.com

Hey rook, Try high tack frisket or med tack they seem to work well on fine sanded foam.

I have a large quantity of really cool wallpaper from the 70’s a surfing mate of mine said it would look great on a board…the pattern that is …when making a board would it be possible to put the actually paper on the board before the resin was poured so the a pattern was embedded in the board…this sounds like a stupid question…a lateral minded answer would be appreciated…thanks Tom

i think it would depend on the thickness and stiffness of the paper tom, try a test piece on some foam scraps. http://www.feraldave.com

Dave! Thanks for the response (everyone else, too!). Much appreciated!
