I am considering getting a stepdeck (Bing Elevator). With the step, does the flex make them more susceptible to stress cracks and breaking? Any surf the Elevator?
I haven’t seen that model, but if it flexs it is suseptible to cracking. I’ve shaped a few. Across the deck cracking is always a possibilty. Some like the Yater Spoon are stepped, but not thinned out enough to really flex. Therefore not as likely to crack. I think the design defeats itself if it doesn’t flex. I like 'em; but only if they flex. Lowel
get a stepdeck that does not step down straight across the board-like many do. those are the ones that will snap.
the steps that go straight across to the rail are the ones I have seen suffer the most, I do not shape them for flex, but to reduce frontal weight, many disagree that not enough foam is removed to help, but I really sculpt my steps to get rid of a lot of unneccesary foam, if it flexes enough to notice, the board will get stress cracks./
John Price of Surfboards Hawaii, had the Model A and Triple A, the step had the one of the 2 layers of cloth top and bottom stop at the step, the offset stringers stopped at the same place also. The upstairs of the old LaPaloma theater had a mountain of snapped Model A’s at the step / stringer exit, he didn’t want the public to be able to ever see them, a structual Dodo
Thanks for the comments, guys.
