If anyone has pics of any boards w/ steped decks, can you please post some. I’m making a 6’6" shortboard round pin with a stepped deck, but need to see a visual of what a finished stepped deck looks like. I’ve read all about them but i’m amore visual learner. Thanks for your help.
what is the purpose of the step deck in a 6’6"? a step deck is used in longboards to reduce the swing wieght in the nose end of the board. but have a go at it
its more or less an experiment. i am thinking of using the little ridge of the step as leverage for turns. I have a hard time turning sharply because i weigh 135 lbs and im 5’11" and i use EPS/epoxy construction, so i bob up and down like a cork.
Hit the weights.
Or use a lighter board.
maybe those gulf waves oh yeah i know about 50 groms that through buckets and they wiegh in at 100 wet, but make it anyhow
im just going to make it. if it sucks, it sucks, if not, i will take it with me to florida when i visit friends.
this still doesnt change the fact that i need to see a couple pics. anyone?
Hi Scott! No shots of a stepdeck shortboard in my files, but here is a shot of a longboard with a heavy stepdeck, second from left. Photo courtesy of The Greek Museum in Huntington.
Smooth out the step and make a S-deck instead. Will look a lot nicer, won’t fatigue. Look up S deck in the archives…lots of pics.
mmhmmm
thought so

though even roy only managed 1.7 posts per day…
If you want something extra to work off of on the deck try putting in a concave deck and a tail pad with a big arch bar and rear kick.
Jeff Alexander’s been putting them in his boards under the term “SK8 Deck”
Here’s his write up:
This is on Jeff’s new 7’ 4" Gemini. The Thickness is 2 7/8", but the rail foil comes off of a 2 1/4" board!
Here’s a pic of the board:
Here’s a pic of my board: 6’6"x3"x19.75"
You can see the deck ends up flat not domed like most boards
Rail:
This is what it looks like when you take 3" thickness all the way to the rail like Brewer did on my StingFish:
The thin rails make a big difference in the performance but I think you also have to accomodate for the rdecued volume in the rocker line…
It’s a good way to get alot of volume where you need it but completely opposite of Bert’s theory on going thin and wide 21"-23" versus 19"-21" for a 6’6".
Oh yah Silver was my all time favorite comic book hero.
Probably threw away all the first editions I had with my marble collection…
He has a good story behind his origin
kind of timeless…
Nice to see you back Oneula.
Don’t know that Alexander’s lowered rails are really contrary to Bert’s idea per se…they still end up flat decked, no? I’d imagine that even if Bert’s board are concave decked and “thinner”, that he makes up for the volume in the width and has to taper the rail down in a traditional sense to get the sensitivity out of the board…how do you like the gemini? Always been intrigued, but the only time I ever saw one in the water was his La Jolla/Windansea guy surfing one, and that’s a guy any line-up can do without…wasn’t about to ask for a go, that’s for sure.
More on step-decks…

of course, an archive search would have taken you there Scott…
Attached is my fourth board, the one I like the most. 10’, 2lb EPS, the step is 1/3 the way back from the nose. I use it on all of my long boards. As was said, it lightens up the nose for faster turns (less swing weight). Being thiner it also is more flexable and flattens out when on the nose.

Also, if you bob like a cork on a 5’11" why are you building a 6’6" board?
Smooth out the step and make a S-deck instead. Will look a lot nicer, won’t fatigue. Look up S deck in the archives…lots of pics.
some of these are a little extreme, but…
and check how this one is stepped out at the tail…
Here You go, might be what You’re looking for?
