Steps for a foam stain.....

Hello there, firstly let me thank all those that commented on my last post , and all those who share their hard earned knowledge with others.

Board- 9’6 noserider, poly, US blank

Silmar poly resin

S-cloth.

My question is thus - I am due to glass a 9’6 noserider for a friend. He wants a dark green black board, with a set of rasta pinlines.(dont judge) The logo i have i had printed to use is in reverse, ie- the writing is white and backgound clear, not backwards!

My thoughts are that if I glass this board in my usual manner, sqeegee logo on blank and then pull cloth back down and laminate, that the logo will be discolored by the resin? Is this the case?

So, I was thinking of a foam stain and if I have a grasp of the concept it involves mixing catalyzed pigmented/tinted resin , taping off mid rail, a-la cut lap, sqeeging resin much the same as laminating, pulling tape. Then I could place my logo, pull my cloth and laminate as normal with clear laminating resin. Does this sound like the way to go?

As allways, any advice from those with experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all for your time and keep up the good work.

Hey man

The foam stain idea will work.

Your other option is to do the colour work in the glass with cutlap technique and then place the logos on afterwards with clear resin and piece of cloth to cover the logo. Logos done with coloured resin under the glass, will get a a darker halo look around them which looks kinda shitty to me.

Zackoopman, thanks for your speedy response. Thats great ,  I was hoping that was possible as Im pretty keen on the foam stain route, sounds like an interesting technique.

So my question now is can you, or anyone else with experience, guide me in detail through the steps of a foam stain?

Again the shape is from a poly US blank, using poly silmar resin and S-cloth.

Any advice/pitfalls/ideas would me most welcome and appreciated , Thanks.

if i were doing S glass and color, I’d go with the foam stain first and a clear lam over.  S glass tends to “show” in darker colors, in my experience (easier to see the weave/threads than E glass).  Not sure if its the glass itself or the finish on it, but that’s my 2 cents worth.
