I’m giving some thought to ordering a Steve Lis fish (twin keel). Anyone with a S. Lis twin keel have any thoughts to share on how the board surfs, inlcuding the conditions that seem to suite the board best (I surf in southern California, mostly beach break)?
I understand his historical place in the design of the board, but want to hear some comments from some folks that have ridden or ride one of his boards.
Lots of different designs of Lis’s fishs, and oftentimes, the customer specs the boards out…
One I rode was 5’6" x 22.5 for a 185lbs’er. Rode easy, caught waves early like my 7’9" funboard (but you had to wait longer before committing), and held in fine with keels 5.5" x 7.5".
Just like my old turn of the '60’s twins, but a little wider and a hair shorter. No big revelations.
I like them better in point go waves rather than disorganized beachbreaks, and I rode it at Cojo shoulder to head high.
I have a 6’4" Lis that I got a couple of years ago that rides just fine. I’ve used it here on Oahu in really tiny waves up to slightly overhead. I wished I had ordered it shorter, maybe 6’0" but I don’t think I’m gonna regret it being a little longer when I get older, which is’nt to far around the corner. I trade off between a 6’0" twin keel I shaped and the Lis twin keel. I have’nt had to alter my style or anything to fit either board, in fact it seems the boards tend to bring out the way I want to surf. Good luck with your Lis.
