Does anyone know if Steve Lis is still shaping his fish?
Saw a recent (past year or so) article in a magazine and he is still shaping nice clean looking boards. Not sure if he makes them for sale or if they were more for himself. Sorry, I don’t have a contact number - will post if I find one though.
Thanks, Also, has anyone out there compared and ridden Steve Brom’s fish to a Steve Lis fish? Thanks.
Tom Whitaker in San Clemente makes the closest replica to the original Lis Design. Plywood fins and all.

Does anyone know if Steve Lis is still shaping his fish? Don’t forget Skip Frye…he’s been shaping fishes from way back. Bit of a wait for a finished board though. Derek Hynd love 'em! Check out the latest issue of Surfer out on the racks this month(October). He’s based, last I heard, at Harry’s Surf Shop down in Pacific Beach I believe! Good luck.
Steve Lis does indeed still shape( when it doesn’t get in the way of surfing and his other pursuits.) The best way to contact him is thru Diamond Glassing in san Diego. Phone # 858 566-7629. Ask for Bob Boche, he can tell you if and when they might be able to get in touch with the legend. If however you are unable to coerce Steve to make one for you, try Skip Frye , again contact Bob at Diamond Glassing, he knows how to track Skip down also.Good Luck,sk
Hey sk, thanks for the info. I thought that Lis was living on Kaui! In regards to Skip Frye, does he still continue to shape only one board a day? I heard it used to be a wait for a new shape…but worth it! Maybe things have changed. I know that he had to close the old shop due to greedy developers wanting the land. What’s the longest that Frye would shape a Fish? Would one around 6’6" or perhaps longer be realistic?
I called to find out about ordering a Fish shortly after they moved from the old Harry’s location. I talked to Donna Frye and got the impression that aside from rush seasons you could get a board in a reasonable time. (isn’t Skip Frye one who has been know to ride each board before he delivers it? pretty cool stamp of approval huh?) Maybe the famed wait is related to waiting for a session on the finished board! If someone ordered a “longer style” fish…say 6’6" or longer…does this jump into another category of board? Remember the old Rocket Fishes of the '70s? Are fishes meant to be ridden 6’0" and under? Does Frye shape - or believe in -a stretched out concept of fishes?
I bet he’d make you whatever you want. BTW- saw a clothing ad on a magazine cover with him standing next to what looked like an 8’0" plus board with a wide split tail. ts>>> If someone ordered a “longer style” fish…say 6’6" or > longer…does this jump into another category of board? i saw someone riding a beautiful yellow triple stringer at least 10’ (prob 11’) fish simmons at tourmaline in august
Are these Fish Simmons a standard thruster set up or the original plywood keel-like fins of Lis’ kneeboards?
www.surfenginez.com .Do you paint, and glass your boards too?If not who does the work for you?Herb…P.S. Heard you met my brother Ray at H.B. this summer.Remember Rick McHale?
Hi Herb, The paint and glassing are executed in Santa Barbara at Beatty Products Glassing. That was’nt me who met your brother Ray. That was Mike Black who pretends he’s me when it suits him. He’s well off the deep end in a sea of fish, and a dear friend. Rick McHale, there’s blast from the past. Hope he’s well say hello. Looking forward to meeting you again someday. It’s had to have happened somewhere in the last thirty-five years that I’ve been shaping. Thanks for all of the nice things you have said lately. People make sure that I hear though! I’m so busy, I barely have time to see for myself, let alone respond. Take care, stay well, and I’ll put the pinch on Mike for Ray!
