I just picked this Steve Lis fish up today. I have a couple questions that I hope some of you can answer. I need to get some fins in this thing because the previous owner seems to have tought Future fins would work in these boxes…Any idea where I can find some good authentic ones?
There is a deck pad over the whole board. I want to remove it, any suggestions?
Last but not least, Is there any value in a semi beat up Steve Lis?
Saw that on craigs yesterday too, thought I recognized that partial signature pic. Nice, looks fun. In my opinion, ride it the hell out of it. Fix the dings, keep the deck pad if its original, knee board it even. No real clue on the value, just dont do the whole ‘shine her up and flip it in a few weeks’ dealio. But again, thats just my opinion.
to each his own my man. I thought I’d show you this link. Hamrock showed it to me. It’s a similar board with a pre auction estimate of $2K-4k potentially.
Also, a newer board with a similar outline from a reputable shaper will ride well too. but don’t take my word for it.
Funny enough I went to pick it up and didn’t buy it. If any of you guys want it I can pass on the info. The pad is built into the board, most likely an earlier model knee board. I was really detered by the dings he filled which were a pretty bad job unfortunately. I asked if he had ever repaired a surfboard and he responded, “no” with a smile, seemingly happy about his finish work. He told me fins for it were nowhere to be found, I dissagree, but he had drilled screws through the future fins into the fin boxes and glued them in. I figured I could leave this one behind.
Somebody apparently messed up the fin setup Glued Futures fins into existing boxes. So, it’s already been Frankensteined.
It should be used, not worshipped.
So What we have is a Board That is most likely shaped by Steve Lis. However we have no idea of when the Board was shaped. Could have been something he did in the 70s,80s, or even a couple of years ago.
The Lis Fish was a pretty popular board around San Diego back in the day. Fish still have a strong following among some of the San Diego Tribes.
Unfortunately I don’t know what fin boxes but they are slightly tapered to the back. The front of the boxes have a sort of springy plastic flap that I would assume is the locking mechanism. This board is pretty old, not sure how old since this was my first Lis viewing. Just tried to post a link to it but someone nabbed it. I guess I missed the boat on this one.
Surf it, get a deep barrel riding it kneelo style and have someone take a photo of you getting tubed. If you enjoy the experience somehow try to contact Steve Lis (show him the photo of you getting tubed on his board) and try to get him to make you a new one… That’s if you really enjoy the ride…otherwise surf it till it dies…
It would be worthwhile at least for someone that wanted a Lis to do the worlk of removing the deck pad. Replcing the fins with some nice custom made wood keel fins. You would have a nice exsample of a Lis shape Knee Board. I’m not sure how much it would fetch in an auction.
For me it would be a nice trip down the nostalgic rabbit hole. A trip back to the years when The Fish was new and those who rode them where doing some amazing surfing.
