ive got a question. why is it that i have been getting tacky streaks in my hot coat. the only thing that i think is a variable is the resin batch. i havent changed anything else in my hotcoating and yet i have nasty streaks where as i used to have nice glassy smooth hotcoats. im using uv cure resin, in both lam and hotcoat. finish coats of catalyzed resin are still nice and smooth but my hotcoats are turning out buggared. any thoughts would be most appreciated thanks in advance.
Don, I am no expert, but since you are using uv cure, on the hotcoat you have to flash cure it. that is take it out for a couple minutes, then back into the shade, you have to allow time for the wax to rise to the surface. That may be the streaks you’re seeing. Then back out to the sun for the final baking. But, I am no expert by any means. Wait on some of the other guys they’ll know for sure. ed
I add catylist to uv resin.Let it sit in the racks till the wax rises and it jells…pull the tape and then take it out in the sun and cure it.This whole deal takes about maybe 15 minutes which is fast enough for me.The great advantage of suncure is in the laminating stage not so much the hotcoat, however you can glass and sand a board all the way thru in a few hours if you want.Which reminds me of an old thread I started about how quick one could shape and glass a board and have it in the water.I forget but I think it was maybe 2 hours or something. Your problem may be the wind. I noticed strange marks going across the hotcoat, that I never had with regular resin. Also noticed that it didn’t happen when the wind was dead. Try putting enough catalyst to kick it like normal, inside, THEN put it in the sun. Comes out way better.
thanks for the responses all good stuff. i have also noticed that the streaks do not occur whwere i have applied extra resin on the the laps for a smooth transition. in fact you can follow a streak and see that it magically stops at the lap. i wonder if it could be something in my lam process. perhaps i should use a little more resin in my lam.
Hi Cleanline, How much cat added into the hotcoat uv resin? Regards, Crabie
Howzit Crabie, I shoot hot coats with 15 cc’s catalyst no matter what size board. aloha, Kokua
