just finished shaping my first stubby hull it is just shy of 6’ width is around 23" tail 15"… the real meat of the belly starts about 16-18" down. no side bites, im just going to pop in a single fin box, wondering about how far up my fin placement should be and also what size fin. i know im going to use the greenough 4a but unsure about size 9, 9.5? any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Yes nice board. How does putting a 10.5" FU box anywhere between 8.5" and 9.5" up from the tail sound? Check the archives, and there might be better info. Keep in mind, most flex fins have a fairly narrow base so you can adjust accordingly until you find the sweet spot. then mark it so you can remember it in the future. with my single fin setups, I take the fin and lay it on its side with the base lined up with the stringer, and move it up or down until about 25% of the fin is hanging off the rail of the board. I heard this somewhere and this fin placement has worked for me.
By the way, do you live on the central coast(specifically arroyo grande)?
Install the box and try the fin in different positions but you might want to go 7" 4a. I have a 6’10" mp hull and use a 7" 4a about 3/4 the way back w/ side bites. I tried the baord w/o the bites and fin forward but did not like the no drive while hulling down line.
