Suggestions for a travel board

I’m looking for suggestions on dimmensions for a travel board. I have a 6’8" squashtail thruster to bring and I want something to handle overhead + surf and smaller powerful hollow stuff. I want to be able to get in to these types of conditions early and be able to get down the line fast. I’m thinking of a semi-gun rounded pin around 7’. Any suggestions? Thanks. By the way I’m headed to Panama in April. Thanks

So, a 7’ semi-gun pin, with a 13" tail will be harder to paddle/catch waves than your 6’8" squash. I ride a 6’8" as my short, and a 7’7" semi-gun. I like a lot of paddling power in big surf – just my preferance. Shine http://users2.fdn.com/~shine

Thanks Shine. What would you suggest to get the benefit of greater paddling power? Greater length (i.e. your 7’7"). Wider tail? But I would think anything other than a rounded pin would detract from performance in overhead or hollow surf. Thanks for any suggestions.

I think the idea of a semi gun suites what you’re looking for well. If you want a little more paddling power it’s ultimately about floatation so just put a little more meat amidships. As far as the tail is concerned, for me it would either be a rounded pin with a little width to it. Look at something around 7’7"x11.5"x19.25"x13.25"x2.5" with a rounded pin and see what you think. Or just look at the specks of my “Allrounder” in the archives you may get and idea from it that’s worthwhile. The little swallow rips! Good Surfin’, Rich

I would not go wider than 13.5" and would keep it 13.25" or under – pin tail. On big surf, you will have a lot of speed and you do not want too much tail or you run the risk of sliding out. Also, you want a lot of nose rocker – that slows paddling – add the length to speed the board back up. Keep it a little thick too. You can go as wide as 20". Nose should be short board like. As for blanks and rocker, use the 7’7"R for more of a true gun rocker. Good control at speed – however, its a hard blank to shape. Use the 7’11"R for a more versital rocker – I would not try to go less than 7’7" final length on the 7’11"R (7’10 actual) length, as it will be hard to restore the rocker. Last check out the board archives to see some of the boards there – much of what I have discussed are based on one of my boards called “Traveler” I am taking mine to Costa next month. i made a 7’2" rnd pin that catches waves like a dream. i was reminded how well when i paddled out on my new thin 6’8". anyway it’s 11.25" nose, 19.75" center, 13.5" tail and 2.5" thick. my travel coffin is 7’6" so that dictated the length for a travel board to some degree. i like the extra width in the center, it helps wave catching and keeps more curve thru the middle. it was shaped from a 7’3" P blank and the results were great. at first glance this blank may look too rockered but it works magic! i wish timmy p. would churn out a few more plugs.
