Gdaddy, contact me by PM, and I will be glad to assist you in any way I can. Theory, experience, exact dimensions, whatever you require. Are you game?
don’t post it up on here mate… before long, everyone will be making them. And then what would we have ‘Total KAOS’… secret sause, mums the word
I have sent a PM to Mr Thrailkill to take him up on his generous offer, but I’m also still interested in any experiences others have had with rockers for that more active style of surfing a singlefin longboard.
I’ve owned two Magic Sam inspired boards made by two different shapers; one is a fantastic experience to ride, the other not really. On casual inspection you might not see what makes the difference. Regarding the better one, maybe you can glean something from this video:
I was at the 1966 World contest in OB. The things I remember, been a long time, were that Nat Youngs board was shorter 9’ ? and lighter, the deck had a ton of craters in it. Boards back then were built like tanks dents were bad. It was pretty much a “pig” Malibu type board other wise, I do not remember what fin was in it. This in contrast to what David Nuuhiwa, big 10’ ? round nose noserider heavy big fined board, made for a board that turned quicker and cut backed faster, the future at the time. Plus Nat was a tall guy and really cranked the board around. So pretty much he was riding a smaller lighter board than the competition.
You say you want a more “active style of single fin longboard”…Active as in throwing the board around off the tail OR active as in running around from nose to tail. Old style vs “new” style. I see. and have made longboards for all kinds of different approaches to surfing. Sometimes guys get a board that has a certain style of ride built into it and try and make it ride like another style…It is best to decide what you want the board to do for you in the conditions you surf and go in that direction than getting something that may seem cool to you and your buddies, becuase it has some nifty name or such and such hipster promotes it, but does not work for your style or waves.
I Had a 8’8" sam style board When the Board was made It was styled after the Boards That Takayama was building for Nat in the 1990s I was told that it was an up dated version of sam with some rocker refinments and a 2 plus one fins. That Board was one of the best Boards I ever owned. the rocker in the nose was flater then the average Longboard of the time no concave in the nose rocker apex was slightly behind center, with a bit more tail lift from fins back. a very slight v
I do not have any numbers wish I did keep better records.
