summer waves hawaii

Where’s the best place to get waves in summer that is not Honolulu?

My parents are heading over for their 25th and us kids are tagging along. We usually stay in a condo up in Kapalua, but I’d like some decent waves this time, somewhere that will still keep the parents happy.

DiamondHead early PMs.

You can get lucky and hit a swell any other place, but DH is mostly the most consisitent with the biggest.

Sandy’s is prolly #ONE, but it’s advanced surfing, boogieboarding, and bodysurfing.

Diamondhead is a good call. I’ve not surfed it myself, but I’ve observed it going off. Looks really good.

Diamond Head cliffs is okay but sort of soft and generally choppy and windswept. Kaikos and Cromwells towards Black Point are much better waves. Just before Diamond Head theres Tongs and Rice Bowls. If you head further East there are several spots there that get good but can be a far paddle. Further east theres China walls and the theres also the Sandy beach area.

Going West theres Sand Island, and some mysto sharky spots near the airport. Then Ewa and Barbers point area which is sort of soft waves. Further West theres Maili Point which can get really good on a south swell and will hold just about anything. If you want something heavy go to the end of the road to Yokes.

if you’re staying with your parents in Kapalua you won’t be surfing Diamondhead since you be on another island.

You need to start looking for spots on Maui to surf.

All the spots they just told you are on Oahu.

Maui has some good surf too…

Maui has a lot of spots, but the south side is tough because it’s blocked by Kahoolawe. I haven’t surfed there, but I know a lot of people who do.

There’s Maalaea which is a dream wave with lots of heavy local action. Then there’s a spot just past Maalaea heading towards Lahaina. It’s a point break that I’ve never seen, but a guy I know on Maui said it’s a really good spot. Then there’s a couple of spots off the highway on the way to Lahaina. Just before the houses at Lahaina there’s a break that my cousin says is good. Don’t know that name either, it’s just off of a private housing area (I think it’s called Puamana). Lahaina has several breaks like Mala Wharf. You could also go to Makena and bodysurf or boogie board.

I would recommend going to Wailea and snorkeling just off the beach there. There’s a lot of fingers of lava that stick out making little bays all along the coast. Just snorkel along those fingers. The most incredible reefs I’ve seen in Hawaii.

If you decide to go to Kauai stay somewhere at Poipu, there’s lots of good surf right there.

Oahu may not be paradise anymore, but we have a lot of surf spots on every side of the island.
