First, Thanks to anyone willing to help me out. I am trying to help a friend who is too proud to ask for help. He fixes surfboards, and has done it for years. He uses the sun exposure resins, for reasons you guys all know about. Lately, the hot coat resin has not gone off completely, leaving it gummy and frustrating. The thought is that we need to add more surfacing agent to the Sun Cure resin, but we have never had to do that in the past.
I was going to call the Ventura Surfboards Hawaii store and have them send us some SA to see if this is the problem.
Have any of you guys experienced this problem of late? Any other suggestions other than adding more SA?
The only reason surfacing agent would come into play would be if you added the SA yourself and failed to add enough or if your pre-mixed resin was sitting around for afew weeks or months and settled. Always good to stir or shake UV if you haven’t used it in awhile. Most likely you didn’t exspose the resin to UV properly. Exspose it to the count of ten or fifteen and the put it back inside or away from UV light. You should be able to see the wax rise. The resin will get a cloudy look to it. After several miutes put it back outside. Of course if problems persist start using alittle catalyst. To fix the stick resin; re-hot coat with catalyst. I think you are referring to Fiberglass Hawaii. Call them. I’m sure they can set you straight. Lowel
Lowel, Thanks very much for sharing your expertise! The oddity about this problem is it’s sudden occurrence, which makes me think that mixing the UV resin is the first step to victory. My buddy is Type A, with “get er done” the reining character, so we have never shuffled the repairs in and out of the tiny shop door after brief UV exposure. The " outside and off" has always worked. That said, I will slide him a Valium to encourage his willingness to try brief exposure, albeit at risk of a door ding! Thanks also for the polite correction on my Surfboards Hawaii reference. I dated myself! Best,
McDing has some great advice there. Another option that works is if you shoot your hotcoat, pull it tight, let it sit until the wax rises, then take it outside and you can let it fully cure. It’s just another option that requires moving the board less. A flash cure will work too. We also have UV bulbs that work too so you don’t have to even move the board. Always plenty of options.
Lowel and Fiberglass Hawaii, Mucho Mahalo's for taking time from your busy day to help us out. My buddy was able to get some SA from another glasser, and, along with waiting longer to run it out the porthole, he is a happy camper, and I no longer have to hide the razor blades!
Word around NorCal is that SA is hard to come by. A lot of the shops do not have any to sell. Can you confirm, Fiberglass Hawaii?
There is no shortage of Surfacing Agent around these parts. If you’re having trouble getting it just let us know and we can get it to you pretty much next day, even with Ground shipping.
Thank you to both EZ foam and FiberglassHi for graciously responding to my inquiry about the availability of SA.
Best to all and thanks to Swaylocks for the great forum!!
