Yes, oil works well. 

Soap only has limited effect.

I bought some sunscreen call ‘Sun Mud’ a couple of years ago, I think a small startup which has since disappeared.

It was not extremely effective for blocking the sun / preventing sunburn, but it was the only sunscreen I have ever tried that increased grip between hands and surfboard. 

So for those who want to formulate their own concoctions, consider that. I’m not sure what part of the SunMud did it, but it felt a lot like there was some beeswax in it. 

I used some beeswax dissolved in eucalyptus or teetree oil to form a paste for the same purpose a while back: Makes hands very grippy, for eskimo-rolling in bigger surf. 

There are several YouTube videos on how to make your own.  Anyone have experience with them?
