Hey guys im considering an SUP build for my next project, when i finish what im doing ATM.I was wondering if anyone could help me out with dimensions/shape.I am 6’2 and 100 Plus kilos and looking for something that i can use for a bit of cross training, flat water paddling as well as playing in the surf.So far from what i have been reading I gather something along the lines of 11’6 long 30" wide and 5 - 5 1/2" thick are the basic dimensions i should be looking at.As for shape i dont have a clue what i should do.
I if anyone who has had a bit of experience could throw me a few ideas i would be grateful.
I am looking at compsand construction with eps and hd foam, with a double up on the skins in a triple glass sandwich for added strength. Not sure if this would be overkill but id rather sacrifice weight for durability.
I agree with honolulu. Too long, thick and wide. I learned on the exact size he mentions and I weight 100Kg */-. The important thing was the board was designed with a flat rail to rail bottom at the balance point and the flat deck was flattened to the rails to max distance for a more wide stance while learning.
Shaped blank (pre compsand wood) should be about 4 1/2" thick and the final thickness will be 4 3/4" Use 1 pound foam and place 5lb foam or corcell inserts for the fin boxes, leash plugs, Since you are making it take off 1/8" on the deck area where you stand and replace with a corcell or d cell insert. For the compsand part I wold go foam/ 4oz/ wood. The final shell glassing schedule I would go 6 oz bottom and and 6/6 or 6/4 top. Your board will be light and super strong. All the construction will be hidden by your veneer.
If you are cutting your blank consider the bottom rockers of the clark catalogue 10’5"S and adding 3 inches flat rocker either side of center. Also a nice rocker from the same book would be the 10’7" H and you continue to add 6 inches to the natural nose rocker already happening.
Also, if you have a short blank the final length can always be adjusted up to 6 inches longer with nicely planned nose and tail blocks.
So If I were you I would go with length of 10’6" to 11’, 4 3/4" thick, 28-29" wide. Using either bottom rocker mentioned above.
I would try to personally see a paddle surf hawaii board if you could. The touch and sight of deck and rails is all the explanation you should need. Best of luck on your project.
