Can anyone share what their particular SUP’s are weighing-in at ?
I’ve got a 11’6" stringerless blank of #2 EPS weighing 20lbs already. I expect this thing will be 30lbs easy after stringer and glassing. Is this out of line with what others are doing ?
That’s about where my last couple of big longboards (not SUPs) weighed in.
I thought a recent 1.5 lb density would be lighter but by the time I got enough glass on there to keep it from feeling spongy, the weight added up. The final result was about the same as a heavier density blank with a little less glass.
I think the guys using light EPS with compsand are really on to something.
My last two 11 footers weighed about 22 lbs. One pound EPS (Blane said it was ok), with double 6 bottom, triple 6 top and a bamboo compsand style deck patch. No fins in.
I just finished two weeks ago, and put in the water today a 10’ x 28" x 5", 2# EPS with H100, 6 Oz cloth, Epoxy, .125" Dcell compsand (like Bert’s post from 2004). With the deck pad roughly 63"x 21" (tapering to tail) and all the fins in, it weighed in at 25.8 pounds. On the few waves I caught this morning (Oahu south shore Ala Moana) it was much more responsive and fast than I expected (the release edge at the tail is thin and has a hard edge. The outer fins are 4wfs so I can adjust the toe depending on the surf (I"m also in a steep learning curve in all this board building stuff so the adjustment is super) I’m hooked, SUP is fun and really opens up the ocean to look down into the reef between sets. Keep having fun.
Aloha, Pics should follow. The whole impetus last November to make my own quiver came when I priced out a quiver, then chatted with a buddy in Japan who pointed me toward swaylock’s. These boards are light and strong. Not Burt light, but still respectable. Henceforth, I’ll go with 1# vice 2# EPS. Oh, and good for me at 200 pounds. Cost me between $190 - $410 (SUP) to make. Thanks to all the great post from everyone that helped me get to this point. Special thanks out to Oneula and Mark Eckart on Oahu. Keep having fun.
