Have you guys seen this?? I was actually googling to see if some had done it… yep someone has, Mistral…
I had been thinking of something more along the lines of a smaller, bat-wing (as sometimes seen on canoes) type sail that could be deployed (somehow) using the paddle (and possibly the surfer) as part of the mast/boom structure. If a socket was embedded in the deck, it might be possible to use it as a kind of “universal anchor” for leaning post, fishing pole, or mast. It might also be possible to have a take-part paddle shaft that would server as the upright member for each application.

Richie Buehn and Steve Forstall are building them also. Richie just finished a huge SUP quad fish. I asked him where the pole holders were and he said he hadn’t put them in yet.
where there were old transition windsurfers
the spontaneous generation of stand upstarts
generated…duh Maui?

the crossover attitudes

who has the hots for Robert cummings’ sarcogaphgas
and gets caught stealing it from forest lawn.
a real blast for the whole family.
they are looking for stunt doubles and extras for the
mass landing scene.
They want a thousand boards to swarm the beach at once.
this movie is gonna be greater than
blue crush ,beach blanquet bungalo, and ride the wild surf ,and surf nazi must die put together.

ROFL!!
The “sailboard hotties” as you call them couldn’t surf??
Rush Randle, Laird Hamilton, the Angulo’s, Robby Naish, Dave Kalama, Robert Teritehau… you asserting these folks can’t surf?? Do I smell some “anti windyrig” sentiment?
Whatever happened to allround watermanship?
ambrose understands many TRUTHS behind the reasons people do things and how things originated,
some of these truths people dont like and many of us are too afraid to explore because of what we may learn about ourselves
in terms of surf greatness there is a difference between being a dancing bear (look how cool I am) and being someone who understands timing and ones place in things (how can I help you)
not a put-down just another perspective to consider, take care
the primary guys who couldn’t surf were land locked euros
and midwestern american skiers
and tundra caterpillar opperators
that just wanted surfing “--------”
so bad they could taste it
but couldn’t comit to wave chasing as easily as
doing laps on a sail craft.
who can surf?
those who surf necessarily
i.e.
seals dolphins and other organisms
do so to survive their environment
fishermen who fish the coast are a breed apart from thosse in rivers and lakes
those who fish santa barbara are differrent than those that fish morro bay or the great northwest
sailophiles are supermen
as are kite fliers and
towists.
they are none of them surfers until they catch a wave.
and wind assist and motor assist are primarily a breed apart .
the elegance and commitment
to achieve the no
paddle take off
to liken ourselves
to our extra species brethern
the seal and dolphin
is a quest exclusive
of any deliterious
flotsam i.e. ‘necessary equiptment’
taste a pure ride
on a wave and all the junk in between fades.
name dropping media select
icons to farther an
identity arguement
is falling on deaf ears.
the hoards unleashed
with popout equiptment
scantly trained or mannered will come to bite
promotors asses .
meanwhile waves will go unridden
while ““SURFERS””
on the Rhine and in the dalmatian sea or hudson bay and lago de garda
or lake tanganika
maybe TITICACA
then the bosphrus and the sea of cortez
every one a surfer…a surfer in the real sense
one that buys corperate surf products
to justify and deliniate
their Identities as individuals.
saliboarding is not wave sailing
waterskiing is not surfing.
I listened to buzzy trent
when he said :
it isnt surfing.
the good surfers have been driven to darkness
the photos of the old guys heats at the buffalo contest
were tear jerkers. those old guys can still surf.
why you dont see em surf is because the venues
swamis malibu rincon sunset
are clogged with
eager dedicated novices and beginers
and alternative watercrafts
some from the immediate vacinity as well
as world travlers collecting stickers for their
21st century steaming trunks.
hot surfers from major land locked cities world wide
who live surfing all the time they spend away from the ocean
and demand recognition along with returning
impressarios picking up their equiptment after
laying the craft down for ten to fourty years.
The transition sailboard oppertunity
to access beach boy style
stand up padle surfing
{my primary point my dear lad}
is the obvious kindling for the growing forest fire
about to overwhelm the surfing world
from stockholm to doheny
and every body of water world wide.
and every body will want the ego gratification
of snagging a wave at the bu and one in front of the SRF
and one from the indicator and one from the peir
and all those guys can surf name em off.
but none of em surf like buzzy trent.
thats why he hung it up.
…ambrose…
trying to get puffy about
justifying an over commitment to a watercraft
specialty aka picking an arguement
with me falls on deaf ears
I am too tired from being in the water on my mat.
and I ditched everybody and surfed by myself.
Ambrose,
still sounds a tad jaded to my ear…
You see a horde of fluorescent kooks ruining your waves, I see an interesting design that does something I was wondering about. I’ll continue to ride a variety of equipment, in a variety of conditions and I don’t give a hoot whether some oke in hawaii thinks I am or not a “surfer”. I make my own boards and ride 'em how I like. And whilst your posts are amusing, they still detract from the design aspect of this thread, namely a SUP board that can be used as a sailboard, sorry if Buzzy and you disapprove…
you want jaded?
not a chance
perhaps galvanized
but far from jaded
I have been utilizing leftover and scraps from the get go.
I was raised in a circumstance far from privilidged
my genius has been applied creativly
and with respect
you can use a door for a table.
You can ride aything you want
any time you want
any where you want
I am not trying to discourage you from doing that
the oppertunity to express yourself
in your availiable venue is what design growth is for…
dont try to get puffed up and distort
my coments into self serving arguement
be put on notice I have been riding diffrent watercraft options from my day one
try to catch up. I did about forty years forward
and now I am working backward reviewing backwards from 1961
to get a better idea about why the guys that came before me deserve more respect.
I was the kid that spray painted flourescents on my stuff in 1962
wetsuits were black because thats all the neophrene they made
and It Wasnt bonded to nylon
it took off skin abrasively
my first wetsuit was five sizes too big and was a hand me down
some oke?
you mean
Oakie?
my folks went west before oklahoma was a territory
and the oakies fled the dustbowl in the 1930s
perhaps 80 years after they emmigrated west.
or uke?
or Moke?
you are a surfer if you muss up your hair
or bleach it
or wear a surfy t-ee shirt
or let your hair grow long over one eye so you can flip it out of the way
or grow your hair long to save the sunbleached hair you aquired last summer or the summer before
or tell people you are a surfer
or make a cool board and go surking once … in a while
or drive arround with a board on the roof of your car
give a hoot?
you mean you wouldn’t hoot your approval when I caught a wave
on my reshape 8’4 blue foam at ano nuevo in 1963
on my 6’8’'roescach hull in may of 1968 at the rivermouth in santacruz ?
or my three stringer reshape asquare tail at cannons in matzatlan in july of 1968?
or my 7’6’’ swirl bottom minigun pintailat twelve foot hanalei in november 1968?
all because you were riding a brand new copy of a new mass market shape?
the stand up board sailboard I made in 1982
is still outside in my collection of boards
you obviously didnt care to inspect it as closely as the mistral advertisemrnt
you reprinted.
a swell design to plagerise.
I wanna make a stand up 13’ paddle board with an outrigger
and an adjustable track for the planing ama I shaped in 1972
before I bought my laser sailboat
to ride summertime outside hanalei
buzzy trent was the kind of surfer I have learned to look up to.
as was Dale velzy
and Dale Solomonson
and george Greenough
and others including wind surfers
and guys that owned chevy nomads
and volksvagon beetles with built in kitchens
Buzzy didnt bother to disapprove he just died.
after riding the most advanced boards availiable in his time
in the biggest waves on the surfing planet.
and hang gliding the cliffs of makapuu
you miss the point of my posts so easily,
not to amuse but
to inform and pay respect where respect is due.
I congradulate you on making your own boards
and for thinking about design.
…ambrose…
surfer joe was a lame popular song of the 60’s
that was heralded as iconic by the un innitiated
and scorned by practicing surfing esthetics
good wishes surfer dave.
