NICE!!!
from a board swap in santa cruz 2001. clockwise from the top left a yount (santa cruz), pop out, g&s, homemade kid sized pig, unknown, chuck dent, surfboards hawaii, owl and ???
it was an epic day- we pigged out!
the long view. such a fun day! august 2001 at wilder ranch
otto’s board rental/surf shop across from cowell’s. after otto passed away jeanie sold all the boards- check how many d-fins! i think that is bob pearson and ward coffey on the far left checking boards.
sorry gnar no pig shots yet… soon
but, check the hotel in the background!
thanks steiny!
I hate to admit it, but I think I might have rented a board or two from Otto in 1961-62 or so when I was learning to surf. Some of the worst boards you could imagine. You would get cut up from the unsanded glass threads hanging off the boards which were made by local kids that Otto hired.
the magic carpet motel. i think the photo is from 1985 or so. classic. i will try and get a better scan
STEINY: hey thats cool how you remeber OTTOS ..... if my memory serves me right, didnt he have a monkey that sat in a cage on a pole during business hours... if i remeber there was a reward posted when the monkey got shot?? and i agree worst boards ever... old boards that he paid kids to glass over , with little sanding.... ahhhhhh the memories???
i moved to santa cruz in 1982, the monkey was already gone but the shop was still there. i am a pretty social guy and try to remember the stories i am told. the magic carpet hotel was so cool. they hammered all the coolness off and now it is a howard johnsons. ottos was the skate park for many years and now is a parking lot. if the money ever starts flowing again they are going to build the monterey bay sanctuary visitor center there.
Sort of related, but i think the idea of a longer board with a dropped widepoint, and a narrower nose than tail works great. I have a 7'10", which is in no way a pig, but has a narrower nose than tail ( just! ), a slightly pulled back widepoint. It goes INSANE, my fave board now ( twin keel gathering dust! ). Trims beautifully, and while i cant get right up to the nose, i can get close enough for super fun trimming action. And manouverability?, awesome, turns like a much shorter board. Very fin dependant, and setup as a thruster, it releases off the top, and back down again like nothing i've surfed before. In weaker or small stuff, the 2+1 is the best.
EDIT, Hmmm, just after i replied, i saw all the other recent replies. I didn't see them til after i'd replied. Odd, unless everyone replied all in a short period of time. Amyway, rock on.
Drinking a nice californian common/steam beer. Yum!
Lucky bugger!!, im drinking a home "shaped" version. Wish i could get that here is aus. And many other US craft brewed beers, and also ( definately ) some fresh UK ales.
sorry mate- not available in aus? cha! what good is the global economy?!?!?!! if you ever visit our part of california the anchor steam brewery tour is a wonderful way to spend your morning. we had a potluck party for my 50th birthday and a group of friends went in together and brought a keg of anchor steam- what good friends they are! despite a lovely neighborhood santa cruz organic brewery (i can walk there from my house), anchor remains my favorite.
i hope you got a surf in today- i got to surf in trunks- we rarely get the air, water, and wind to cooperate to do that here.
here is the tour info:
