Surf Cap : sewing a button

I’ve replaced my surf cap that is about 15 years old.

I had cut the visor off because I dont like them.

So anyhow I bought a new one, you know the type velcro chin strap and flippable rubber visor.

However, on my new surf cap I’m thinking of keeping the visor.

But…I want it to stay in the up position for relatively most sessions but

be able to pull it down when there is quite a bit of glare.

I have thought of two strategies:

  1. Velco strips to keep it up , but after having glued some velcro on it, I am not entirely pleased with this.

Havent water tested it yet, but it is lacking.

  2. cutting a slit in the visor and sewing a button the the front of the cap so I can button it up rather snugly.

So I am going to sew a button on it.

My last experience with sewing through wetsuit material was using fishing line.

Any one have any specific recommendations as to thread material, as I’d like to get away from fishing line.

Waxed dental floss?

Perhaps you might consider using neoprene adhesive/repair glue to adhere a snap from the fabric store in lieu of a button. That might be simpler and effective?

That might also be a lot more comfortable than having a knot of fishing line or something rubbing against your forehead every time you wear the hood…

Okay, at first, before posting this, I poo poo’ed the idea of a snap.

Figured they’d either rust and corrode or the holding power wouldnt be want I needed.

But went to the hardware store and saw they were made out of nickel plated brass,

so I thought I’d give them a try.

Punched them on with a punch and hammer.

One Snap holds the visor very securely, I can not tug the visor loose unless I

take the cap off and then use both hands to seperate.

This should work precisely and nicely, as it should.

Also nickel plating doesnt rust but will wear off over time.

Additionally brass doesnt rust, but it does corrode.

When the snap wears out, due to use or corrosion they are easy enough to replace.

Kit with 7-10 snaps and punch setup cost about $7.50 US at the hardware store.

IMHO or more frank, these caps should be made this way to begin with!!

On second thought the snaps cant be done simply with neoprene.

The neoprene stretches under force and the snaps pull out.

Nylon material needs to be glued around the affected areas to reinforce the

neoprene and keep it from stretching where the snaps have been placed.

Dooooh! Hand to Head!
