surf craft influence

I was asked to hump wood ogres board construction thread I felt honered to be asked such a thing.

His thread shows how years of experience in wood working has helped him produce a work of art. Also his new technique of building rails and also efficient ways to go about making a timber board.

So here goes show us what you do are you influenced by surfing to make other things ie me i am a furniture designer i am influenced by different construction techniques that are used in the surf industry. Or you could be a professional shaper that trys his hand at sculpture i have heard of several shapers that paint…

So hump away lets se your art/craft

so here goes

I had a solo design show influenced by craft (surf craft, water craft boats so on, and the hand made craft)

this is a table that i have made fibre glass look like wood. I was keen to make something using this techneque after seeing my brothers lidle for the first time. I loved the board and the fins oh the fins. “Look at the grain” I told my brother “yeh pretty sweet hey” he said. so a year later this is wat i came up with glass slats for an out door table.

heya crex,

i’m no craftsman nor artisan, simply an advocate of sustainable surfcraft. deforestation/illegal logging being a huge thing where i am and wood recycling (almost always taken from traditional all-wood houses and public structures like old railways & wood-built buildings) colliding with cultural preservation issues, the only option left to me was plentiful, cheap plant fiber— reeds, canes, vines, grasses-- traditionally used for local handicrafts (basketry, mat-weaving, etc), hence my motivation to build a woven plant fiber-HWS variant. not being a conventional board-building material, the learning curve necessary to transform plant fiber into worthy surf craft has been somewhat squirrelly, but we’re getting there soon.

my assembly methods from hereon may differ based on the form of plant fiber i’ll use-- whether in unprocessed stick form or woven into sheets-- but overall i’ll be sticking with the material to explore its viability. what sticks in my craw is its potential for causing further environmental damage, as these materials are gathered in the wild in an almost industrial scale by hinterland community cooperatives, with no replanting being done— they’re not called wildlings for nothing.

all things considered, i might as well buy china-made rattan & bamboo weave for my HWS variants hehe they’re cheap & plentiful too!  :D
