surf in california

Not really a shaping question - have enjoyed lurking. I’ll be visiting california over the next few days and want to get some surf time in. Wed afternoon through Sunday. Checking on line, it looks like I’ll just missed a nice swell. What’s my best chance to score. Anything? San Diego to Santa Barbara is about the radius I can travel. Sorry for the off topic post - but hey, it’s surf related. Thanks.

I drove from L.A. north to Ventura County along the Malibu coast Tuesday evening and it was pretty flat. I’d target Huntington Beach on south. You’ll get warmer water, too. Don’t know what the forecast is though. Nels

It’s been really flat in south San Diego for a few days (although last weekend was not too bad). Supposed to pick up a bit on Friday but no guarantees. You should be able to longboard just about anywhere but if you have a shortboard you might have to hunt around. Check Black’s beach if you have the time and are in that neck of the woods.

I’d stay south of county(ventura)line.Hasn’t been jack shit north of there, plus the water has really cooled down again. Not a real fun summer “experience”

Black’s Beach was a good suggestion, but not if the swell has too much south in it. I recommend exploring the reefs of La Jolla. It stays a little glassier there, and the waves are usually better, and never close out. Or you can go to Trestles in San Clemente (actually, it’s in San Diego, but who’s counting). Trestles is always bigger, glassier, and the shape is unreal, but the crowds are huge and your board should be too if you plan on catching anything. I live in Carlsbad, and here (plus Oceanside) has a lot of uncrowded surf, and it’s usually bigger than the rest of the county in the summer, but it’s usually very onshore and often closed out. And then there’s Boneyards, just north of Swamis. Hardly anyone surfs there, but sometimes it is on both summer and winter. The thing about North County San Diego is that there is no localism. You might get snaked, but I doubt it. In all my years of surfing and traveling, home (North County) has the friendliest and most polite surfers around. Officially, North County is from Oceanside to Solana Beach. Del Mar to the Sloughs is San Diego. And, of course, Trestles, Church’s, and Old Man’s are also technically in San Diego, but for the sake of reality they are considered San Clemente. If you need any help, give me an email and we’ll paddle out. I surf Tamarack everyday in Carlsbad no matter how the surf is. It doesn’t close out. I shorboard when it’s chest high or larger, and longboard the little stuff.

May God richly bless you. Bill

Thanks all. I found a few waves and hit all day at San O’ and also explored and surfed the trails further south (wasn’t expecting a nude beach!). Anyway thanks to all for the tips. May try Lower Trestles tommorow. Panchaos has da kine fish tacos! flow

Forecast calls for some nice sized SW and SSW to be hitting then (overhead sets a real possibility). With no significant wind swell, beach brakes may be big, but walled out. If your near SD, your best bet may be reef breaks at south facing beaches (like in Cardiff).
