Surf near Miami????

Greetings…

I recently discovered that I may be getting stationed In Miami… Far from my love … the Straits of Juan de Fuca.

I am trying to sell myself that it may be a cool experience but I am really worried about the surfing.

Research shows me that many awesome surf spots are just a plane ride away, but what about in the back yard??I find wannasurf.com is a crappy resource to trust for information…

I have no clue about south Florida and I am just curious if I should be worried or if everything is gonna be all right… the only positives I can find is that the water is warmer than here and I can try glassing with suncure.

Any information would be greatly appreciated…

Thanks…

or should I give up fish

bring that fish with you! actually miami beach gets ok, surfspot at the very end of the beach 1st street. When it gets a good swell it can be amazing.

There is a few breaks a little north that are pretty good to great on a good day. Look up “reef road”

You will definatly be getting wet but really good surf is pretty rare down there.

Thanks for the info!

Hey Zo, a friend sent me this pic… somewhere near miami… have fun. Sometimes i wish I was a coastie, you’re always near the …coast.

cheers,

Brennan

Zo, its very inconsistent but there is good surf to be had.

Sometimes epic as shown in the pic.

2-3 hours drive north is more consistent.

Central Am is very close as are the islands.

It could be worse, it could be better.

PS - I met a good surf guy in PR last year from Juan de Fuca…his name was Jerry…I think.

i live an hour north, and i surf a lot. you just have to learn to be happy on thigh-waist high wind chop. meecrafty’s pic was from this past hurricane season…and that day was GREAT. they’re few and far between, but when it hits like that you get some residual stoke that holds you through 'til next time. also, this time of year, the day after a cold front passes, the air is a bit chilly, but there’s always a fun, clean swell to be had. and the water never gets under 75 degrees.

Howzit ZoSurf, Like the way you hid the fin boxes with the flames. Aloha,Kokua

if i can find the pic i will post it. but miami gets some awesome hurricane surf this year they got easily got over head super glassy a frames. super sick waves. that area of florida is kind of inconsistent but i fell its probably got some of the best brakes in teh state. and if you can drive a bit deerfield beach and reef road are real good

There use to be a little honey that frequented this site, and was also quite a gifted board builder, very gifted. She was from south Florida.

She showed up one day with her hubby and we shared some surf/workshop talk,She was quite charming.

I was hoping she, even in a guise, would ring in ,but I haven’t heard from her in awhile, hope all is good.Herb

(I leftout the name(s) to protect the innocent,I think it could be archived)

Its pretty inconsistent like everyone has mentioned. I live about a half hour north of there. If your willing to spend the time to drive further north you can definitly find a little more size when there is a swell. Miami only gets like that once or twice a year. I typically surf anywhere from Jupiter Island to Boca Inlet. It is usually worth the drive and even better if you go further north to Stuart and Fort Pierce. There are some good breaks to be found if you’re willing to put in some time looking too. You should also check out wakeboarding/wakeskating/kiteboarding/etc. Your definitly gonna have some flat days so crossovers are key to staying happy and in shape. It may be flat but you can’t beat surfing in trunks year round.
