surf tech cosmetic repair OR yes I've heard the locomotive

This morning before 5 EST I heard the locomotive roar by on the north side of my home.  Unfortunately the rail line is 3 mi south of my home.  At daylight I went outside to inspect damages and found that we got off relatively light from the tornado.  One victim is my surf tech.  It usually hangs just below the ceiling of our back porch… The damage appears to be cosmetic only, lots of scuffs, but also numerous chips where the clear polymer shell is cracked or missing.  I am a duffer and have experience with PU repairs only.  My understanding is that ST shells (final coat) are not PU.  What approach would you suggest for this task?  Best regards and thanks in advance. cmb

It will be very difficult if not impossible to match lots of little touch-ups.  I think I would be tempted to get some automotive glazing/spot putty, apply to any deep scuffs/chips, wet dry sand the whole thing to 220-320 and take it to a body shop where they can respray the entire board.

I repaired a GSI - I used epoxy to do the repairs, then spray painted the whole thing with epoxy appliance paint from a rattle can.  Dunno if Surftech is the same.

Well, it is an appliance.....

Goodmorning, John, Huck, & Mike;  I think i need to add a few details.  It is a veneer over foam with a clear finish.  The integrity of the veneer seems intact so it is the clear finish (epoxy???) that I need to make whole to prevent water damage.  While cosmetics are a concern, they are a distant second to function/integrity at this point.  Thanks again

Hi -

I am assuming that when you say "PU repairs"  you mean repairs using polyester resin?  If so, good news.

If the veneer is intact you can repair the scuffs and dings with polyester.  I don't think they used fiberglass cloth over the veneer on those... just resin.  The wood is marketed (or used to be) as 'Structural Veneer' and was applied over a layer of fiberglass and epoxy resin.

If the veneer has been penetrated make sure to use epoxy resin as a filler/sealer - polyester resin will melt the EPS core on contact.

If you visit a website called "The Boardlady" Eva Hollman has examples of wood veneer repair and all kinds of other helpful info.

"Thread cleanup in the General Discussion aisle..."

Glad the train didn't get you and yours.  Sorry it did get the board.

Like Huck, I just finished a GSI repair and one thing I've noted on those and other similar "factory" boards is surface prep.

Before jumping into overall board fixes, take one of your small dings, clean it with clean warm water and mild detergent then course Scotch Brite pad sand the area.

Try a clear epoxy spot fill, allow to cure then check adhesion.

Delam from surface finishes on these boards has been a problem - for me anyway.

david the hick.....go piss up a rope.

I’ve repaired a couple of surftech wood veneer longboards, and the ones I did had just a thick polyester coat over wood veneer. No fibre glass, and definitly not epoxy, just polyester alone. I also peeled one broken surftech wood veneer longboard and it was eps, fibre glass with epoxy resin, wood veneer and thick polyester coat.

To be on the safe side I would use epoxy if pu resin gets inside your board it’s not going to be fun repairing that area.  just IMHO
