Surf Trux Quad

OK, finally everything came together.

I now have a 2# EPS, 5’11" x 11" x 18" x 14", swallow tail, quad with a deep single concave in the water.

Thanks to DrewTang for the shaping bay and glass.

Thanks to Stuart for sanding.

Thanks to Blakestah for the SurfTrux.

Thanks to Rainbow for the fins.

Thanks to Swaylocks for the inspiration and information.

Mike have a few beers on me tonite. Wish I were in a position to offer more.

I was quite nervous, staring at the blank. My first attempt was a series of “making a mistake and correcting it” until I decided to just stop and have it glassed.

This being my second foam board (did an HWS), I decided to put down the surform and use a planer.

I’m glad I did.

Rails come out much better and more even, when you have control of the passes with planer depth.

Still have a long way to go but this one I’m not embarrased to show my friends.

Number 3 is already bouncing around in my head. It’s about time I start glassing them myself.

I glassed my HWS and it came out OK. We’ll actually it was a mess, but I learned from it.

I picked up the board at 2PM yesterday and had it in the water by 3. Waves were small, about waist high and soft.

Can’t really give a report on how it works as the waves are a bit small. But I can tell you guys it is fast.

Like… really fast. Must be the fins, because my shaping skills didn’t do the board any favors. Unless the varying depth, somewhat uneven, deep to shallow to deep, single concave is a stroke of genius.

Going out in a few minutes, as soon as Gabe Kling (local boy) surfs his heat in France.

Waves are still small but quite clean

Thanks guys.

Nice one. Been waiting to see that done.

Looking forward to more reportage.

Hey Riddim,

Do the fronts and rears rotate, or just the fronts?

Can’t wait to hear more ride reports…

If that is your second, you are doing very well!

JSS

Both sets toe in.

The rear set toes in 1/8" and the front, I believe is 1/4".

Just got out of the water for the second session with this board.

Waves are still small. Thigh high.

Should pick up tonight and tomorrow. I will have some better feedback after a surf in some bigger waves.

So far everything feels really good.

The board is a bit slow on the take-off but I wouldn’t expect anything different from thigh high waves on a 5’11".

When the board is flat it really moves. Real quick like a fish around sections.

At the top it redirects and gets to the bottom quickly. That really helps in this close-outy small stuff.

It will be interesting to get this thing up on a rail and see how the board reacts.

Chris

Thats one fine looking shape. That rocker foil is sweet as buttah.

Definitely need some real waves tho…looking forward to a detailed Trux review.

DrewT is a good guy…good on you guys.

Cheers

Eggsactly. This was a best guess at how to optimize it. Although, if you swap the rear fins side to side, the rears will still rotate, and will hit a toe-in of 1/4" (like the fronts). Since many quads run 1/8" toe-in to increase speed, we though we could use a normal thruster toe-in on the front fins and be even faster. Rears toe a little less. The toe-in angle can be adjusted fairly easily. A tiny piece of glass, a drop of resin, and some sandpaper to reduce toe-in, and just the sandpaper to increase it.

The fins are made by Rainbow, obviously the Pavel-style rear pair, and I think those are the R1 fronts. Riddim also has R2 fronts he can swap in. Once you get comfortable we can start playing with the setup and get the available changes dialed (fins, toe, etc). Hope it is a blast.

Hey Riddim,

Any new updates on this one?

JSS

Sorry, no updates.

After a few sessions, literally 4 or 5, one of the boxes started raising out of the board.

Saw a slight lip at the edge and worked it til the whole box came out.

The boxes are kinda slippery. Real shiny. Guess we should have put a few scratches or roughed it with some sandpaper before setting it.

Board has been sitting, waiting to be repaired since the first of Sept.

Has it really been three months?

Last I checked Drew had it at the front of the line to be repaired.

Drew?

If I recall the board did ride nicely. Was difficult to get dialed. Seemed to get, and lose, drive at odd times. Totally unexpected.

Sometimes it was great and I was like, hell yeah I love this thing. Other times I felt like a goof with a fully extended body and no surfboard under me.

I really do need to get that board back in the water.

Thanks for the reminder maxmercy.

The boxes depend on a glassover. The top outside of the boxes has two heights so you can lay a layer of glass over it, glass on the lip, and grind until one of the two heights shows. If the lip lacks glass on top it won’t hold. Roughing it up should be unnecessary.

riddim if you need a replacement box with an intact lip on top let me know (FOC). If you try to install them without glassover you would need to rough it a lot, and use a lot of glass to really stiffen the glass around the box (like you are supposed to do for FCS or Probox). The glassover lets you install a lot lighter and plenty secure. Sorry about the box pulling out.

experienced the same with my latest and it’s on the opposite end of the spectrum.

the classic evil “funboard” “tweener shape” as we call them.

and I was very pleasantly surprised like you

I just wanted to acknowledge that Dave’s got something worth investigating here with his Surftrux that he hasn’t gotten alot of credit for cause alot of folks as usual are afraid to give new things like this a try.

Kind of like another guru fin designer I’ve made aquaintances with who is on a completely different fin tract.

Also great service

a great package

and he follows up

to make sure his customers are satisfied

and if not

he wants to know why

and how he can help resolve any issues

met more of the same here

and it gives me hope for the future

in a world of growing grumpy-old-farts

Dave I’ll show this to Drew in the morning.

He set them originally and is light years beyond my abilities.

I’m still super a newbie.

I appreciate the offer of a new box. Actually 2 of them are out of the board.

The rear boxes were likely set the same as the two fronts that came out.

What do you think I should do?

Pull all four (the other two) and re-glass?

And it’s not your’s or your product’s fault. No need to be sorry. Sounds like there was just a lack of info or a miscommunication about how to set the boxes. I’m sure all new products go through similar trials.

I just checked and I still have your email address Dave. I’ll be in touch and also give Drew your address for any questions he might have.
