Surf Wax: Petro or Eco - Whats your opinion?

Hi guys,

Most of you will know that I have an interest in surf wax and am looking to form a business manufacturing it. I understand why people might question why, as there are tons of surf wax on the market with not much money to be made. Putting this aside though, what are your personal preferences for wax in terms of eco or petro? And, when buying eco wax, would you prefer to buy an eco wax with a nice (synthetic scent) such as Bubble Gum or would you prefer that your natural waxes were 100% natural even if the scent wasnt as nice? Really just looking for opinions really if anyone wants to share their voice?

Thanks

Only tried “ECO” wax once.  It was sent along free with an order of board building supplies.  It was a disaster.  Turned puke brown almost immediately.  Actually discolored the surface of the board.  Only Sticky Bumps for me or Zogs in a pinch.  Zero interest in other products.  Just being honest.  Good luck.

PS:  Eco is a turn off.  Sure sign of a product that is inferior but made by people who think they care more than the rest of us peasants.

seems kind of silly when you think what chemicals went into the object you are putting it on.

I kind of like the idea of using cork and not having the melted wax or need for wax issue

just a little rough on raw skin though but plenty grippy and not too heavy

way better than a soft top skin

I think organic sunblock and a board cleaner/sock makes mores sense

just saying

good on you to try something though

knowing the current surf crew mentality and population it’ll probably sell (cause Machado’s doing it)

Thanks guys for the input. Really appreciate the opinions. My opinion is actually the same as yours which is that eco-wax is all well and good for the planet, but to put it bluntly, its sh*t. I am actually going to start manufacturing petro wax but I am also looking to put out a natural wax for the “other” people haha. I think Oneula you are right ultimately with sticking with products that suit natural ingredients rather than just trying to make something for the sake of it just to call it eco though depending on the income, it appears I will indeed have to put out an eco wax. Again, my preference is petro as I think it is best suited performance wise. Mako, you make a good point about eco turning brown and this is something I figured out early to eradicate, so am well researched before I put out a natural wax but you have reminded me to go over my notes again before I start manufacturing any eco stuff! Anyway, and without wanting to repeat myself overly, thanks for the input to you both. I really just started this thread as I wanted to see if it were worth putting out an eco, which it probably isn’t but finance may dictate otherwise. Anyway, thanks again to the both of you. Love these forums as everyone is willing to help and share knowledge, which is not the case elsewhere online. Im a firm supporter of Sways as I think we all are.

The best wax ive ever used was the FU wax which goes on like your spreading a can of Murray’s all over your board. beyond sticky! Its 5 bucks a bar which is 4 bucks too much for me. - If I wanted natural wax id make my own -

The best added bonus about wax is you can buy a few extra bars and leave them in the car - car smells awesome.

I want my surfboard wax to smell, look and feel like surfboard wax.

i got some really wierd looks from airport security while traveling with murrays superior pomade - i think it was mostly due to how different the people on the can look from how i look haha

I can vouch there’s no money to be made in surf wax, but I like selling my product to a small and growing band of afficionados…I’d love to find a US partner!
