surfboard as decoration

i’m a frustrated inland surfer and am setting up a tiki bar in my basement so i can get my ocean fix. it will be a wet bar and i’d like to use an old board for the bar top. really don’t want to spend money on a new board and not sure where/how to find a replica (or used board) for the bar top. any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be great!

I have been told a lot of people just cut out surfboard shapes from either plywood or doweled together pine/redwood/fir, “shape” 'em, and either paint or stain them. They are then usually covered with some waterproof polyurethane. There used to be a lot of tiki bar related stuff on the web. Usually much cheaper this way than finding a used board, as most any board under $75 is going to be thrashed, ugly, sunburnt…

Dave Dedrick just finished an entire pool area for a local hotel in Cocoa Beach with surfboard bars, showers and pool decor. Really cool project. Plus he made a good buck on the deal.

I think a true Swayaholic would do one of two things: 1. Shape your own foam bartop and glass it. Three stringers to accomodate the sink. High rails and slightly concave deck. Hibiscus print fabric inlay. Put a bottle opener on the side of the fin, and put a trash can underneath. Make the base of the bar out of shaping stands. 2. Cut a funboard template from an 8 foot sheet of 3/4" plywood. Leave the edges perpendicular so you can formica both the deck and rail. Put a SurfTech label on the deck. It’ll look real enough to fool most people.

Bartops have to have 50/50 rails and a gloss coat!!!

put some rocker in it so the spilled drinks flow to a "collecting " spot.then, at the end of the night, you can siphon them into a glass for one final burner of a drink! sounds cool-have fun!
