Try Essential Surfing at a surfshop, or library.

For historical reference, IMO, it’s hard to beat Macolm Gault-Williams website. Much of it is free, some articles are for sale. The “Hot Curl” issue alone is a wealth of info on how some very influential early shaper/designers followed a series of design changes towards a more functional result.

Another fine source of information is surfresearch.com. (aka “Pods For Primates”)

Dave Parmenter has written a complete detailed anaysis of surfboard designs “A Surfboard Anatomy” that may help.

By the way, all of this stuff was found under “Resources” right here on Swaylocks!

Interesting thought. Has anyone ever actually done a doctoral dissertation based on surfing and/or surfboard design? Anyone out there know of one? I would be interested in reading it.

You could use Google Scholar to find out if there is anything about the exact topics you are looking for.

Thanks. I’ll do some research and share what I find.

Hello all, first post. I’ve been a reader for a while now though. I’m hoping someone might recommend a few books to give me a foundation in surfboard design. I’ve done several searches but not turned up much. I’m hoping it’s appropriate to post this question here rather than creating a new thread. I’m looking at “Essential Surfing” as I hear it’s thorough, however something more specifically aimed at design theory is what I’m after. I see Dave Parmenter’s “A Surfboard Anatomy” has been recommended here as well.

I hope to build surfboards and I assume it would be best to start out learning the basics of design before getting into the nuts and bolts of the construction work. I don’t have the necessary resources at the moment to really get started shaping, but I’m very keen to start learning. I know this is a classic “new guy” question and so I appreciate you guys and gals taking the time to share your thoughts on it.

Oh yeah, my name’s Jason, I live in northern Japan, and there’s a typhoon on the way. Nice to meet you.

Cheers

Hey all, I hope this is not breaking forum ettiquette-repeating a question, but something tells me someone out there may have a decent book to recommend. I’d really appreciate a push in the right direction. Perhaps I’ve posted this question in the wrong forum, thus no response…?

Anyone…?

LeeDD said it before - Essential Surfing by George Orbelian.

Oh yeah… George is the former design editor of Surfer. He started the Design Forum.

A new interactive Essential Surfing website will be online in a few weeks or so. A new edition of the book will come out sometime next year.
