SURFBOARD foil[s]....

…these are GREAT !

thanks everybody !

Now…by way of contrast …

Do some of you have side-on [profile] shots of maybe sixties mals, seventies single fins , '80s thrusters , '90s thrusters …for a comparison of foils , please ?

Thanks !

ben

Here’s a couple for the collection.

First one is a Magic Sam replica by Paul Gross.

Second is a mini-gun by GH.

Cheers.

Here ya go Chip-

The photo was taken in a dark room, so I think it nicely illuminates the rails.

L-R:

5’8" x 19" x 2.25" Timebomb MC fish (as pictured above)

5’8" x 19" x 2.25" Timebomb MC fish (dupe of the orange one)

5"8" Larry Mabile/Basic Element fish

6’3" x 18.75" x 2.25" Channel Islands Eagle’s Wing (with Tom’s next generation X2’s)

6’2" x 19.25" x 2.4" Sharp Eye GL-2

6’4" x 18.75" x 2.25" XTR Rusty Pro-Ject shortboard

Not pictured:

9’4" Timebomb longboard (jokingly called the “Sakayama” - I sent the dims from a Takayama Model T to the shaper and he made a sick noserider for me… dare I say I like it even better than the Model T off which it was based)

9"6" Challenger “The Bump” stepdeck circa 1969

12’ Con Marine Rescue paddle board

thanks a lot !

For Chipfish, the bottom board is a 6’8 x 19 3/4 x 2 5/8

thanks willyman .

er…had you been drinking when you took that photo?

…it…looks …a …little …crooked …

ben

Small room, had to turn the camera sideways to get the whole board in the picture.

…that’s so hard to do without spilling your drink , too, I find…

that’s why I prefer this sort of setup…

wank are you from sb and surf campus point?

Point Rat, no I’m not. I live in Honolulu.

here ya go chipper; my last finished board and my latest blank.

same outline.

minor rocker tweaks.

1/8" thicker at thickest point.

volume increased by 2 liters and shifted forward to keep the tail thin.

uh…thassit; enjoy.

Here is the Egg I finished shaping last weekend. It’s 6’8"x21 1/4"x2 3/4".

Maybe I can get some opinions on it. Because I had to sand some hotwire/glue line defects out of the bottom rocker (first time hotwiring on a EPS 2" sheet glue up) the nose and tail came out quite thin. I think the tail is about 3/8 to 1/4" at the end. Because of the thinness, the fin box (single fin,7" future) will have to be put at about 10" from the tail.

Not to highjack the thread, but any opinions??

Thanks.

Peace

looks good but if the tail is too thin…

it’ll affect your rail shape and foil

it’ll be real flexy; could be good if you surf forward; if you surf way back, it could be squirrelly.

eps is cheap and recyclable

shaping is fast

you’ve already got rocker offcuts.

with a new sheet of foam, you can be back to a glued up and finished blank with about 5hrs work.

glass and resin are expensive and messy; better to never glass a board you know is going to be less than what you want and there’s no going back…once the glass is on, you’re not going to scrap the project.

time to weigh the value of finishing vs. starting over…I started over on this last project.

template your outline on both sides of the foam sheets before you glue them (that’s four outlines to draw); leave a 1-1.5" border inside of the outline (easy to do with tape) and apply your glue; then throw the two sheets, stacked and taped to minimize slippage, on top of your previous offcut so you get your desired rocker, toss it all in the vacuum bag. Put your profile templates so that the glueline exits right at the nose and tail of the deck; you’ll have no problems then; seam will be right along the rail, glue will be tight, but you won’t encounter any glue when hotwiring. Did this on the last one; 15 minutes of dust free preparation saved me 45 minutes of dusty (and inaccurate) sanding.

really like the nose foil/rocker on that egg.

HTH

-I swear i’m usually happeir…note the rain in the background

sorry bout the “a little off” camera angle… i’m still working on my photography skills

Thanks for the advice GWN.

I’ll decide this weekend. It’s only 15$ for foam and another 15$ of basswood for stringer. Might be worth the effort to get an even better shape.

Peace

Here is the foil on a 9 footer I did in August

Looks good Art. Clark blank?

What are the rest of the dimensions on it?

Hey Greatwhitenorth. Thanks again for the advice.

Was thinking… if you precurve the sheets of foam when you laminate them together, wouldn’t you get spring back? … I’m just imagining that there must be some kind of memory in the foam, and I’d have to ‘over’ curve the rocker to get it to stay in line with the templates.

Peace

my 7’er [single fin] 70s ‘copy’…
