surfboard repair_if you own one, learn to fix it,

O K.

Alotta . questions on how to fix a ding…lets say you are on an island in the south pacific, or deep in mexico, you ding your board getting in, or out of the water on the jagged reef , or what ever, OH! MY !!! What do I do know ??? Holy Crap, my sun cure resin/epoxy is harder than my… , well you know , what do you do know? PLEASE, DONT DO THE WAX THING, …

What would you do ? What have you done ?

If I’m that far out, with no supplies, I’d have brought along a couple of back-up boards.

Yeah, good idea

But if you really like that board and its a small to medium ding, get some stickers that are available, , they dont take up any room in your travel bag and stick to boards, just peel off the backing and stick them over the ding…watertight emergency repair

I'm calling Bull Shit.

Any true swaylocker worth his weight would make a new board in the time it would take to repair a ding.  A true Swaylocker would use the resources found within the indiginiouiousous peoples.

You could make a perfectly great board out of redwood, or maybe beat one out of stone. Or better yet make a hollow concrete board?....Hell they make sail boats that way, why not a surfamabord.  or better yet you could make one out of papermache and bees wax.....so bohemian, so beautiful..grow the long hair, grow the full grizzly adams beard, surf the holistic surfamabord.

Come on...ding repair, that's bull shit. make a new one.

I’m with mokunue on this one. Use a sticker. Clean the area as best you can and put a sticker on it. Worse thing you can do is wax or duct tape.

I keep a roll of mylar packing tape in my vehicle for quick waterproofing of minor dings. Same material that stickers are made from.

Ok....whatever....I'm a backyard ding repair guy.....

I've been slammed hard on Swaylock's about the clear tape thing....SammyA is doing it....I guess I'm not wrong after all...

And wax vs solarr ezzz.....well.....As a backyard repair guy I choose cleaning out wax over cleaning out your slob job of solarwhateverezzzz.....and......

....Sorry pal ...

....most surf travel dings come from Airports.....

Howzit stingray, Remember the scenario is you are somewhere's where there are no materials and I have used the sticker a couple of times when in that same situation. One time the sticker was on there for almost 6 months since I was i Mexico for 4 months and then 2 more months in Az, but as soon s I got back to Kauai it did a proper repair. The one thing to remember is to flush the ding real good with fresh water and dry it before putting the sticker on, that way it won't turn brown. Aloha,Kokua

Yes....

Try buying NEW Solarrez. Or just try buying the normal resin ding kit and get some UV catalyst powder for the quick fix’s.  I always buy a NEW ding repair kit when I travel. I take 2 replacements of whatever fin system I have such as FCS or Future etc. just in case I rip a box out. I also always take a few leash plugs. I usually throw in a glass on fin and some cloth and rope also, just in case I can’t fix a fin system. I then throw in a tube of that two part waterproof puddy you knead together with your fingers…that’s great for little holes and I even did a leash rope one time…that stuff sticks good to fiberglass.

As for as desperation ding repair goes…tape can be found anywhere. Packing tape, duct tape etc. I put a little wax over the tape to keep it from flapping off. Stickers always good. I filled a hole with toilet paper one time. Filled holes with wax and then tape over! Candle wax will fill a hole. How about glue? 5 min. epoxy? No mater where I was I would find a way!

I’m with Resin Head.  A new surfboard from your taxidermy skills.  Take  that blue fin tuna you caught with your bare hands.  Use the bones to make a hollow structure like the wood guys do. and then stretch a seal skin over it and shrink it in the sun.  Be a man!

Howzit billy, Duct tape is not water proof and a B&^$h to remove all the crap when you take it off,the packing tape is better. Aloha,Kokua

It appears to me that Mokunue is quite a surf expert....maybe not too good at ding repair...that's OK ....

.......maybe he's  really good at other things........Just slam some wax in the ding...wax in the ding is better than water....and better than el crap o ding repair kit..........Just my opinion......and I'm no expert....

...and I have been dragged over the coals for telling people on Sways to use clear tape for temp repairs....You know...clear tape is just like a clear "sticker"...........Yes ,my friend.....I agree...but my non-expert opinion has brought me much greef on the internet....................Ray......

You should get dragged over the coals for using wax as a ding filler (lets water in, doesn't let it out).

As for someone dragging you over the coals for mentioning using clear tape, did these people know what they were talking about, or where they anonymous internet tough guys??? Clear tape (mylar like someone mentioned above) works great, just make sure the surface is clean and dry. You can take the wrinkles out (and a better seal) on a compound curve by using a little heat from a lighter or heat gun.

If you guys would read the original post he’s asking what you would use if you had no options…"lets say you are on an island in the south pacific, or deep in mexico, " .I would stuff 3 bars of wax and a ham sandwich in my ding if it kept me in the water.  Obviously some of you don’t travel far from your big can of resin.

Stuffing those things in your board won't keep you in the water any more than putting nothing in there will keep you out. I'd say use wax to "plug" a ding only if it keeps the edges of the ding from cutting you. Saying what will or won't work in a pinch has nothing to do with where you are or where you've been.

I don’t carry stickers or clear tape when I go surfing, just wax. Hit the reef paddling out or in, stuff it with wax. Hit somebody, stuff it with wax (pull out the hairs first). When it’s time to do a proper fix, you just clean it out real good.

You can stuff the ding with wax immediately, can’t do that with a sticker or tape, not when you’re still in the water. If it’s a big ding, go in to get enough wax to stuff it then go back and finish your session, or you can wash it off let it dry then put a sticker over it, if you have one.

What insight!

Hey Surfthis, if you want to surf with a big hole somewhere on your board just because it's location won't cut you then you go ahead and do that...your not riding one of my boards so what do I care? Obviously most people traveling will be doing these temporary things like wax and stickers to try and keep the water out of their boards and prolong the boards life. If you like brown waterlogged boards then don't fix your dings just surf on! Myself, I fix every ding in my board when I'm on the road and if I put a big hole on the bottom of my board while traveling I would want to fix it so the hole doesn't effect the ride or end up pealing off a big flap of glass. I've put a fist size hole in the bottom of my board once while traveling in Java and putting nothing in that hole would have been stupid, it would have effected the ride and probably ended up thrashing an otherwise good board? But again, if weight and ride aren't that important to you than disregard all the above tips and information.

You missed the point my friend. Never said to leave it unpatched. Just stated that if you stuff wax or a ham sandwich in the hole, it won't keep water out. Just the way it is. Me, unless I'm shipwrecked on a deserted island, I'm going to bring something along that will work to keep water out.

It's a judgement call, like your example, if it affects the ride, or it'll cut you and you have nothing else, by all means, duct tape it, stuff it with wax (or tar for that matter) and get it where it'll ride. Just don't think that wax is a good temporary fix because, like duct tape, it lets more water in than it lets back out.

Howzit billy, I have to totally agree about putting wax even near a ding since it is so hard to clean it out so you can do a good repair. When somebody ever brought a board to be repaired and it had wax in the ding I would double the price and tell them why and if they wanted it done for the real price I told them to take it home and clean the wax out and then bring it back. Some times I would just tell them to take it away and never bring it back. Aloha,Kokua
