Surfboard Repair Rack

Hey guys,

i’m doing a project for my university, with the aim to build a rack for surfboard repair. You could really help me, by telling me how and where you attach your board or what kind of racks you use. Would it be helping to have a rack that’s completely adjustable in height and angle?

Cheers

Oh boy have you started the debate. Stands are a hot topic

Personally, I use wooden racks I hacked together set into buckets filled with cement. Adjustable, you can slide em around not too much of an issue. But still wooden and wear down.

Our very own Barry Snyder who works professionally I believe uses old Semi truck rims and some round bar just stick welded together.

As far as adjustability goes one stand stands out from the rest in my mind. A user on here made a stand completely out of square extruded aluminum that slotted together. The bases of each half could be bolted into the ground or weighted, and each half sould slide back and forth to accommodate to different lengths. I think FoamEZ sells something similar-ish.

Whenever I do repairs I just pull the foam off my racks and wrap masking tape the wrong way around on the rack. The smooth fiberglass adheres well to the tape and the board doesnt slide around.

Goodluck!

Hey man that’s a cool project you got yourself there!

I personally just use a selfmade wooden rack, pretty much like hippo008 here, but I thought about building a proper one for a while now. Didn’t really know how to start though.

For me it would be important  to be able to tilt the board and lock it in that position. That just makes it easier to apply the filler, and also if you use UV-Cure polyester like me, you can adjust the board towards the sun.

Tell me if you found or maybe even built something comparable!!!

Kindly,

Thomas

Thanks for the answers guys, I really appreciate it.

I’m into this project for a while now and there are some more questions that came to my mind.

What do you think about making this whole thing mobile, to take it with you on a surftrip?

It would lack a bit in stability of course…but that’s just a matter of contruction i think.

And what are the damages you get the most?

Cheers, Freddy

Never thought about it, but sounds cool!

Depends on the stability i guess…

If you want to lock it in certain positions or angles like you say, you have to clamp it in some way right? Would kinda be annoying not being able to look along the rails properly… And thats the part where most repair gets done, speaking for myself here.

I’m pretty happy with my rack because i learned it like that i guess and i live at the ocean so no need for mobility, especially if it means a lack in stability or stiffness.
