Surfboard sanding finish

Has anyone use the water base poly acrylic spray can to go over the sanded board?

normally I would go up to 320 and sometimes polish it, but after seeing Epoxy 101 with Greg Loehr I wanted to try what he did with the water base acrylic spray , but when I did it, the spray came out a little foamy and the finish did not look too good. thanks in advance

Yes I tried this but wasn’t happy with the results, last board I used 2 park polyurethane and got much better results once I figured out how to apply it. But that was for a gloss effect finish.

For a sanded finish I would recomend only sanding the board up to 60 or 120, if its clear resin sand it heavy but try to stop before hitting too much weave, this will keep the wait down, a lot of folkes dont sand enough.

Then giving it another coat of resin thined with a little dna and heated just to seal any exposed fibres that could wick water, put the board somewhere hot for a day or two to post cure it then sand it up to 320/400.

Once its sanded go over it with a green pad and some water and ditergent to remove any dust trapped in the scratches.

This way takes a little longer but you will get a great finish.

If your after a gloss effect then 2 part polyurethane is definately the way to go with epoxy.

Tried a water based acrylic spray a while ago and got the same crappy result. Maybe it’s the brand I used or the layer thickness wasn’t enough.

I just wetsand to 600 now and call it done.

I use Varathane Crystal Clear Waterbourne Diamond Outdoor Wood Finish, Outdoor Gloss. http://toolsmet.com/varnish/rustoleum-j.jpg

It seals up a board well, is easy to use and gives it a nice finish, not as nice as a proper gloss coat but still very nice. Takes a couple days as you need multiple coats and a fairly long dry time in between. It is water based and bonds well with epoxy, I even mix it with spackle instead of water when I seal the blank.

much easier and healthier than using 2 part poly finish.

Try hitting it with the buffing pad after the spray acrylic has hardened.

If your using the gloss acrylic for a finish you will get crappy results. The stuff I use is the flat or mat finish which gives you a normal flat spray finish. This always worked fine for me. For a gloss, buff finish, the only way is to gloss and buff … or use a two pak urethane.

Thanks to all of you for your responses, they were all a big help

now when you say to get a nice gloss finish you have do a gloss coat and then buff it or use urethane, I’ve seen the spray urethane water base I think, would that work, or is it something different?

thanks again
