I’m just starting out in board shaping. Haven’t actually started shaping yet, I’m just reading up on it and getting the tools that I need to get my start. I’ve already got some of the basic tools but I need a stand. I don’t want to buy one as the ones I have seen for sale have been pretty expensive. I’ve looked up building my own but I wanted to get some input from somebody that has built their own shaping stand. Can Anybody give me some advice on how to go about building my own? Thanks all.
I built the one shown in the pdf that is somewhere out there in the archives. It was pretty easy to build & maybe cost approx. $50 to build it (I had some scrap lumber laying around). Here is the link:
this drum has been beat on before, hard, repeatedly, and long. A decent stand can be built for the cost of a couple screws, if you can get some scrap wood. Hell, even a junked packing crate can provide the lumber. The limit is the builder, who must understand what a rack is for, how to properly construct the joints, and how to make it stable without tripping over it.
I built the ‘U’ shaped stands, which work very well. One change I would make: Make the ‘U’ one additional 2x4 wider. My padding takes up too much space and doesn’t allow me to get most blanks to lie at a 45 degree angle.
