Hello guys!
I know that has a lot of information about waxes here, but I couldn’t find anything about the mixing time;
I’m having some trouble to find the right time to keep mixing after melting all the ingredients together …
I’m adding the calcium carbonate and it’s going all to the bottom of the mold when the wax dries… Don’t know how can I avoid that…
Could anyone help me??
Thanks a lot!
I use a 3:2:1 (beeswax:coconut oil:carnuba resin flakes) by weight and heat them together in a hot water bath until liquid (3-4 minutes) then cool in a plastic container in the fridge.
There´s probably better formulas but this one is natural and simple.
Hi Piteraman,
Do you think there is any difference between cooling at room temperature or cooling in the freezer?
Are you using carnauba wax or carnauba resin?
Thanks a lot!
Honestly, I never have used the freezer because I am not in a rush. I think a possible negative to freezing could be crystalization of the oil possibly trapping moisture and preventing cohesion of the suspension, meaning the mixture may separate. I have not experimented beyond slowly cooling it in the fridge. Also to make the wax solid it does not have to go below the normal temperature of the fridge. Coconut oil solidifies at 18c or 65f so that may be below room temp so try cooling in the fridge to make the mix solid. Try it both ways, in the fridge and freezer. I will as well the next batch and share it on this thread.
I use the carnuba resin in solid flakes. There´s a hardware store nearby that sells in bulk for about $5 USD per pound, €10 a kilo. I consider that cheap and it is natural, unprocessed. I think most paint shops, at least the better ones, should have it for sale, even Amazon or Ebay. It melts into the suspension quickly.
Try grating the wax or finely chopping it so it will melt faster and save you time and energy.
Maybe it is more costly than store bought but I can make it on demand. I think 600g costs me less than $5.
$$$$$$$ It’s called “Net Loss”… $$$$$$$
Thanks a lot man.
I once tried to put it in the freezer. The only difference I could noticed is that the wax shrinks a little, and it’s easier to take it out of the plastic or metal container.
Have you tried to put some natural filler or binder? I’ve heard some guys talking about diatomaceous earth…
Cooling in a plastic container is probably easier to remove the wax when it is cooled rather than metal. For instance, cooled wax left over in the metal can I use when heating the mix sticks to the can. The wax does not stick to plastic.
I just use a simple mix without additives. Maybe the thought is a natural wax may go rancid without an additive to preserve it but that has never been the case for me. My simple mix binds together just fine and does not separate.
I started using this mix for a natural finish for wood working and tried it on my board, and it worked ok (it also works as a hair styling wax; I use it on my car as well). There are probably more efficient, longer lasting wax mixtures out there that have additives. I dont mind spending more money and using more wax knowing that I am not polluting my local waters. Beeswax, coconut oil and carnuba resin are safe enough to eat so its all good in my book.
In the end, if people are polluting the waters they surf there will be less fish and biodiversity. Less fish means it costs more money to buy fish at the market. The cost is a wash in my mind. I like seeing and eating fish where I live. Hopefully, more people open their minds to living with nature.
Piterman, I totally agree with you.100%!
That’s why I’m spending time, money and hope to make this well enough to surf…
it all compensates when you know you are doing that for love, and getting in touch even more with the nature!
Before you go all eco / agro and waste a whole bunch of time and money you might want to read the label on a bar of Sticky Bumps. The most popular surf wax in San Diego. You are not saving money or saving the planet by making your own wax…I lose money on every surfboard I build or restore…each finished project provides years of good times to it’s owner…surf wax gets used one time…
…Net Loss… …
Reading that was a ¨net loss¨. Why are you hating on people trying to create? We are not complaining about toxic surfwax in use, instead we are discussing solutions for positive change.
Sorry to hear you are not making money.
No hate in my comments…funny really…how you twist my comments…into something I did not say or imply…
