It’s shocking but true. Buying high end surfboards off the rack is actually more affordable than getting your daily coffee at Starbucks. If you keep your $600 surfboard for at least a year that comes out to $1.64 a day. A foo-foo coffee at Starbucks ranges from $2.75 to $3.50. A year of $2.75 Starbucks fixes comes out to a hefty $1003.75. The shop down the street from me has a nice Channel Islands for $425. That’s $1.16 a day over a year or $8.17. It cost eight bucks for one person to see Lord of the Rings at the movie theater. I have several boards that I’ve surfed and kept in board bags under the house for several years. One of my all time favorite boards is now five years old. $500 bucks over five years is a $100 bucks a year for some unreal memories. $100 bucks a year is $0.27 cents a day. Anyhoo, it’s interesting to think about. Could be a handy point to make when your wife finds out you are getting another board.
Trifin- That same pocket change has added up to more than one surftrip over the years, it’s pretty easy to accumulate enough change to end up with a RT ticket to Guadalajara and a weeks worth of Michoacan surf. On a similar note. There was a great little liner note recently in either Surfer’s Journal or Longboard Magazine about a guy who had a brand new longboard made. When it came time to decide on the details, airbrush, color etc. he chose to take his old favorite down and have them match it, ding for ding, water stains and all. Camoflouged so his wife wouldn’t spot a “new” board in the quiver as easily. TS>>> It’s shocking but true. Starbucks is a continuum of our poser-based economy and society. Just like a Rusty or Channel Island has got to be 1000% better than any board any of you hacks will chunk out. Fact is, consumer reports did a study on best coffee - at the top of the list - Folgers 100% Colombian! Most of those poser coffees were no where man - especially given the price tag. So girls, get yourself a Sterne, Schaffer, or maybe even a Shine - start managing perception, stop being a slave to it. Shine http://users2.fdn.com/~shine
if you really wanna talk about spending a lot of money on nothing, or even better, something that you pay for which kills you, then cigs would have to top the list. i have an uncle who smokes 5 packs a day. i think cigs cost $4 per pack now… that adds up to $7,300 per year. now, say it was just one pack a day… that’s still $1460 a year. thats two new longboards or a small trip right there.

As far as obsessive behaviors go, surfing(boards, wetties, etc.)is a cheap and healthy way to go.Cheaper than golf or boats too.We have friends who go to nudie bars and waste their surfboard money on lap-dances,hundreds of dollars in a evening or go to Las Vegas and gamble-fools!Other friends aren’t happy unless they go out to a fancy restaurant once a week.Buy a wellmade surfboard, take care of it and even after years of service it’ll still be worth a good part of a new board. Clyde Beatie,Haut,or other quality shops glass boards to last-a good investment. Thanks for reading my ramble.Old guy.

Your right about surfboards being cheaper than crack, it was exactly this that was my down fall in Florida. I was left holding the bag, literally, when my EX manager smoked up 6 grand of crack in the last month he was with me. It must be similar to Magic Man’s business snafu, you ultimately wind up being responsible for any mistakes that involve your name. For the folks that want to break into the biz’, it is a lot more sour deals, unpaid glassing invoices, damaged boards in freight, general burns, than the “how great it is to be a surfboard builder”. I’ve gotten to the point that if it isn’t a legitimate client that has a proven track record, what is the point? I have the life long pals that are on the “team”, bought 40-50 boards, they get boards for my costs, but all it takes is the burn of one board and 10 will needed to be built to get back to the break even point. Lastly, most of us are craftsmen first, cavemen biz’nessmen last. It was Velzy’s, Noll’s, Brewer’s and a jillion others who weren’t able to make the paper work end of the biz’ work.

An old master once told me “… I got two lines – the ‘talk’ line and the ‘money’ line. The talk like dont move too fast.” Next time you are in Florida, you should set up a lecture to school those of us wholly uninitiated to the realites you speak of. http://users2.fdn.com/~shine
