Surfboatd Locking Systems

Can anyone recommend a locking system for securing a surfboard to a roof rack? How reliable are they? I assume if someone really wanted to snatch a surfboard they can get around the locking system?

I made a cheap locking system for my paddleboard that would work for any surfboard. Go to a hardware store that sells plastic-coated steel cable and crushable steel slip fittings. Select whatever size cable that will make you feel comfortable leaving the board behind. Make a hoop of cable to fit over the nose of your board. Make another hoop to fit over the tail, with a long tail and eyelet that just stretches to the hoop around the nose. Use a heavy hammer to crush the fittings. Secure the two pieces with a padlock. The widening of the board template makes it impossible to remove. The board is over the racks and the cable goes under. Costs less than about $15 and takes 20 minutes to measure and hammer it together. The cable will flop around a bit when you are driving so put it on when you park. Put tape over the couplings if you want. Works for me. Ride on, Dan

just about any of the locking systems work. All you are tring to do it not make it easy. If you give a thief enought time none of them will work. Don’t leave your board on your car over night in a place that they will have time to work on it. I had a friend that did this and they just took the whole rack system along with the board, to a place that they could cut off the lock.

I use a variation of Dan D’s locking system. My surf ride has gutters and I use an older Aloha rack. What I have done is replace the wing nut’s with regular nut’s and reversed the bolt as the round head faces out and the nut faces the roof, socked down so much that I’ve probly bent the gutters, but who cares, the rack never comes off the car and I’m keeping it until she’s ready for the crusher.

I miss rain gutters, they worked. Also missed is the little “smokers” vent up on the front side. Not to mention the old Dodge slant six engine for its simplicity.Time for my nap. R.B.

Roger, This car has the small “smoker vents”, driver & passenger. I was thinking of you this Saturday. The Mrs. and I celebrated our 34th with dinner on “Federal Hill”. No, it wasn’t “Caserta’s”, but it is still their, same location. Be well, Fred

Happy aniversery.A Grinder with a Frappe under candlelight eh? R.B.
