its a different crowd
mostly younger short boarders, fish mongers, bonzer and Mayhem/Campbell/Pavel/Mandala lovers.
Not many longboarders or longboard talk its a quad world now.
very few folk who make their own stuff like Kalani, Shwuz and DK
A couple of industry folk like tom d, jjr, and lokbox
Buckley and Griff hang out as well to keep Matt and Manuel company
all in all it’s pretty stagnant

Also, Chipfish sticks a Swaylock’s thumb in, showing people it’s possible to make your own board and your own fins, and combine them all in infinite combinations. Guy’s one of the best eye-openers on the surfing internet–we just need to get him full sponsorships, and some machine-like surf to ride every single day, all day long.

Yup, got a troll over there called roy stewart who started a humungous speed thread, Janklow was one of the only sane posters there out of about 600 replies or so.
I really like surfermag because they don’t ban my friend roy although they have locked the odd BONZER thread and a peace thread.

The board porn is all that forum has going for it. There used to be occasional humor, but by the time I checked out a couple of years ago it had become just about as rigid in the overall thinking as the average shorty surf mag. There just about never was anything enlightening beyond the board photos. Strident proclamations made from positions of total ignorance and arrogance were so frequent they came perilously close to becoming the norm. I had to re-register due to inactivity or I just forgot my login at one point and used a different name for the fun of it and because it was easy to remember…the only time I’ve done that online…I figured that said something about how I felt about the place. Why bother when Swaylock’s exists? I’ve had my head/viewpoint pulled inside out by single posts in threads here at least twice, and have had a couple of other major enlightenments from cumulative topic threads…the closest thing in decades to the days when a surf magazine hit the stands every couple of months and the surf world changed with the turning of a page.
Still, it can be pretty addicting…I still check in every couple of months.
Yep- I love all the pics from Griff and Moonlight Glassing (TFAD?).
The discussion forum is mostly off topic crap but there is the occaisonal comic relief from some of the regulars. It’s definitely shortboard oriented so God forbid that anyone start a thread about boards over 7’, unless of course it’s a gun. Initially, I thought it was a bunch of crap with alot of trash talking, internet tough guys; but as it turns out, it’s pretty entertaining. You’ll find me over there as well.

Surfermag is like freshman college or highschool. You can expect a smart remark if you ask for help.
Yes it does have good board pr0n. And a few good posts here and there. It has a nack of pissing off / scaring / scarring minds of ladies that have posted in there.
They have “fads” it went from fish to bonzer . . . now its quad fad, change like seasons.
Its funny, you watch all the people try to post like they know stuff. Some people know a thing or two . . . Also watch the industrites that follow the young crowd to find out what’s hip or not.
I jump in there to see if anything is new. Sometimes there are key gems to be found there (like a few firewire reviews or a few years ago I found this post on swimming that really helped out, or some of the good posts from TFAD), but for the most part when most of the forum says people like Vetea David is a kook because he got scratched by Chopes reef . . . you start taking things with a grain of salt.
If you want some entertainment, go there. If you want real help, gotta hit up sways or go find it elsewhere than surfermag forum.
I think the apples to apples comparison would be the Surfer Mag “General Discussion” Forum compared to the Swaylocks “General Discussion” forum.
One look should tell you what the the difference is.
If you can’t see any difference then you really belong at Surfline’s Forum…
Seems like the yung-uns over there thought the concept of “Forum” came from Penthouse versus the greek/roman art of open dialog.
I do wish PPK and some others like Tanner, Pickles or even Mayhem would migrate over here every now and then though…
I find it laughable at the above posts bashing the Surfermag Design forum. You guys are getting some big heads over here. A little God complex going on?
No, there aren’t many shapers over there, but come on guys, we’re the test pilots. And I’m not implying were the pros, were the ones who shell out hard cash in hopes of putting smiles on our faces after we get out of the cubicles, class, changing diapers.
We don’t have time to figure out vacum bagging, how to deal with eps, or that matter how to order RR epoxy. We don’t have dedicated shops or sheds, or places to store gallons of acetone. Our roomates, wifes, landlords freak when they see white particulates floating through the air.
We all can’t be like you, nor do we choose to.
The only valid point I agreed with the above posts was is the recent trend in labeling a board. We did not do that, you shapers did. Now where’s my CooCoo and crazy emoticon?
Now get back to work and do something cool.
Oh btw, Roy Stewart, rock on! If there’s one face we assocaite Swaylocks to, that is the man and the legend. 
I read some of it and look at the pictures. My impression is it’s kids having fun. Some of it is pretty witty, too. The Roy -LeeD humor is pretty funny and you can check into Roy at his best. Not the angry Roy, but the clever, biting wit Roy. I find the Chineese popout bashing over there funny considering so many of them buy and ride domestic popouts. There are some outstanding shapers that post,too. Wish they would pipe in over here. It’s all supposed to be fun. Isn’t it? Why take any of it too seriously. Here or there. Mike

You know, I liked fincut’s post. Sure, what passes for humor over ‘here’ is all kind of inside jokes, very surf-specific (except for the Psycho/Rubberlove bulls*!t) and a little stiff. Which is ok, most of us are here for surf content and hanging with like-minded guys. But Fincut’s post was funny because there is certainly a strategic element of truth to it. Bravo.
