Surfer nutrition.

It’s all ‘fine and dandy’ to discuss surfcraft design, but if the riders shape is wrong, then no triple flyer vacbag veneer cork springer epoxy sharkskin quad will save him.

What’s your best tip for keeping the riders shape in perfect trim…?

One of the best things I ever did for my surfing was getting back into doing pullups. Pullups I think work all of the muscles in your body that you use to catch waves. They also add an explosiveness to your sprint paddle. I’m just about to get back into them as i have seemingly recovered enough from some nerve and tendon damage from a few years back.

Keeping lean helps a bunch too. Less stress on your ligaments and tendons…Also stretching and core strength and strong legs for turns.

Nothing harms performance like being overweight.

way too many of my friends have become less surfer and more surfboard owner over the decades, 40# overweight, hanging out in the parking lot talking story, rarely if ever actually paddling out.

less beer, more push-ups…

For keeping the paddling muscles working , I’m loving the Total Gym exercise machine (I mean, if it’s good enough for Chuck Norris . . .) plus your basic pushups, crunches, squats and lunges.

That, and skating whenever I can, even if only for a couple minutes after work.

surf super food.

Whole foods ONLY (as close to intact as possible)  i.e. no extracts (free oils, added sugars), no factory processed/manufactured crap. Mostly plants meaning no more than 5-10% of your total calories from anything from animals/birds/fish. A little bit of alcohol now and then won’t harm if done in strict moderation.

I learned the hard way a few years ago that if you only paddle and don’t do compensating exercise on land you can really f-up your shoulders.  So using weights do bent over rows, pull-ups, horizonal pull-ups…

Little chocolate doughnuts …

When hanging out in the parking lot shooting the shit with other geezers I wave my arms a lot. Keeps you loose and the blood flowing.

I had a wonderful Aunt that always said “everything in moderation”.  Good words to live by.

my uncle said “everything in moderation…including moderation.”

I bought one of those blenders that’s advertised on TV and

 The bloody things great !

Each morning, I chuck a banana, kiwi fruit, apple, Weet Bix, and a glass of milk and blast the bejesus out of it all and its so much easier to get a good breakfast in on the go. It breaks everything down so you don’t have to chew thru it all. I raved so much about it at home the kids took it and I had to buy another one. But I bought a better one.

Lots of push aways.

high protein

high fat

lot’s of veggies

VARIETY in all of the above

no grains (this goes for the animals that I eat also)

food is NOT just calories and a few trace nutrients.

food is the building blocks for our bodies.

greatest medicine or worst poison.

The best thing I ever did for my surfing was to change to a low carb lifestyle.  I had always exercised a lot but pounds kept packing on as I got older, until I hit a high of 212 in February of 2013.  I started eating low carb that month, and was down to 161 by September of last year.  I have stayed between 160 and 165 up until now and am surfing better than ever.

Basically, I don’t eat any simple carbs.  You can call it Paleo or Atkins or South Beach but no matter what you call it it works.

I eat lots of meats, nuts and veggies, and I can eat bascially any kind of restaraunt food as long as I am smart about what I order.  Cooking is super easy and is what I usually do.

Carbs are just fillers and bad for you.  Change your body to burn fat instead of carbs and you’ll be stoked

amen to that Ifallalot!

yoga

Sculpin IPA - that’s the perfect thing AFTER a session.

Natural bush honey , cinnamon , raw egg and milk. Straight in the blender…rinse off the egg and throw the shell in as well(calcium suppliment)…SUP’s are hard to beat for fitness and stamina…I should start taking my own advice…(lol)

eat light, push the plate away and cut down on the beer (all 3 of those are the hardest part!)

abs, lower back, stretch, pushups, swimming and oh yeah…
