Surfer's Journal ad for waterfront house

There’s an advertisement for a house on the water on the gold coast of Waikiki. The house used to be owned by my grandfather’s older brother, and sits right in front of the surf break known as Tonggs. After my grandfather’s brother died, my uncle sold it and they moved inland. I asked him why he did that once and he said he spent his life listening to the waves hitting the wall along the water all day, everyday. He said it kept him awake a lot.

My grandfather’s older brother and youngest brother lived along that coast. His younger brother, uncle Jimmy, was a surfer from the wood boards days and knew all the old timers. All the big name beach boys were his friends. He had a regular job, but he enjoyed the beachboy surfer life. I asked George Downing about him and George confirmed that he was one of the old time surfers. Duke Kahanamoku and my grandfather were classmates at the Kamehameha School for boys until Duke dropped out, so Duke may have been another close friend of my dad’s uncle.

If you have about 6 million dollars to spend it’s available.

Wish I was a billionaire. I’d buy it and give it back to your family. You’d have to let me visit once in a while though… Mike

Nah, my cousin said the house was small, and it’s really old. My dad’s uncle was living there about 90 years ago. That’s a long time for a house next to the ocean.
Funny how the locals end up going from the ocean to inland, and all the ocean front is being bought out by wealthy newer residents. My uncle ended up buying a house far in the valley next to the ridge I live on now. I went from living next to the ocean to being up high on a ridge. At least I still have a great view of the surf, and know when there’s waves. I just can’t walk across the street and paddle out like I could before.
