Surfers Rule!

Whew… that takes me back! I grew up in Rossmoor and surfed as a kid at Surfside(before the Army Corp of Engineers decided that the annual washing away/flooding of the houses there wasn’t such a desireable thing).

Any pictures of the Surfboards Surfside crew? I was a junior surf team member along with Chris Hawk(among others)… whop-teee-doooooo.

Howzit Ray, I remember the 5th st crew was a Surfside club, And I belonged to a club called the West Coast Wanderers that Katin sponsored. I remember when the army decided to add the sand and it made for some really good surf since as they added the sand it made a perfect sand point that moved every day. Aloha,Kokua

Hey Kokua… Jim Hennessey ring any Hanalei bells?

Re the sand fill; Once they finished the ‘project’ it never really was the same though. ;-(

I guess there’s a rebound off Surfside’s northern jetty but it’s been years (36 to be exact) since I lived or surfed in the area.

Long Beach Surf Club… Surfboards Surfside team… Chuck Dent’s team… moved to San Diego, Pt. Loma in 1969 and gave all that up. ;-)… thank gawd.

As a kid we would hang out at Haley’s Surf Shop for hours before Chuck Dent took over and kicked the ‘little rats’ to the curb.

Howzit Ray, Yep Jim is just down the street a ways from me. We were on the same moutain ball team in the 70’s with Gerald Saunders and others you may know. Yeah when they finished filling in the sand the surf was never the same but while they filled it was good. When you were hanging out at the Haley shop ( remember it well ) did you know one of his team riders named Mike Edwards, his picture was on Haleys board price pamplet. He is one of my room mates and still has one of the price lists. another friend of mine named Jim Misel was on Dents team and then started his own co named Aquatic Energy, I hear he’s making epoxy composite boards in Capo Beach these days. As for the Long Beach surf Club, Mike Kuntz is a friend of mine and one of his daughters bought the house I rent, I think Mike was number 1 in the L.B.S.C. back in the 60’s. I remember Chuck Dent bought the shop for $ 500 and a Porche.Aloha,Kokua

Yeah,

Good to see you have the memory I seemed to have lost… errrr… misplaced in the sixties.

Mike Edwards, yes, he was the hot kid perched on the nose of the Haley price list. I remember seeing him rip it up in SB… thanks for joggin’ the brain cells.

I went to Cal Western with Jim’s brother Phil. Jim made a couple of boards for me from his shop in OB(with Irv Downing - RIP) Jim Kiener and Le Martel were also from Whittier (where Jim and Gerald are originally from).

Howzit Ray, I see you are now in Hawaii, which island are you on. Mike still has a copy of the price list, Is Ray you real name so I can ask Mike if he remembers you. At one point in Mike’s life he lived in Utah and he had a bad auto accident that required a big pin in his leg, this does hamper his surfing but he still ghets in the water when he can but his big thing these days is shooting surf videos and has some really great footage of the Irons brothers and other Kauai hotties. Have been trying to get him to edit the footage but he doesn’t own or know how to use a computer. Gerald has had cancer and it is in remission but things don’t look good for him so he’s living life as much as possible these days. Jim is doing good in the construction trade and is on his second marriage these days. Aloha, kokua

I’m living on Maui, teaching Upcountry… no that’s not my real name.

I remember the surf going up to and under the houses at Surfside. My mom would drop us off at the water tower and we’d hang out all day. This must have been before the sand was added. I have pictures of me with my new Austin-Baird surfboard. So stoked. Great memories. Now I’m surfing in Oregon. Mickey Young.
