Is it appropriate? Is it “mainstream” enough? Would you consider surfing to be a sport instead of a recreational pastime or lifestyle? Does anyone care?
Surfing is something you do in the ocean (or a really big lake)…
No.
Surfing is too popular already. I’d prefer the Olympics stick with Real Sports - like team handball. In fact, maybe we can get all the surf schools to switch over to teaching team handball. Or volleyball on the beach - anything but surfing!
How about hooking up a gymnist with some parallel bars and put them on a SUP board, now theres a sport.
Its a shame we just missed the China Games, i hear theres some factories over there that make cheap pop out boards
I’d prefer the Olympics stick with Real Sports
Seems like a discreet China thread…lock it down before our minds explode!
But seriously…the closest thing to surfing already in the Olympics is figure skating, full of flaky judging and funky fashion…I can do without it.
I belong to a group (American Surfing Association) back in the 70’s. We wanted to introduce surfing to the Olympics as an exhibition sport during the LA games. It was a bit too much work for a bunch of under funded high school and college kids to pull off.
Unless you are from AU / NZ / Tahiti or Fiji, who wants it to be a summer game. It should be a winter game with big juicy sets.
No big deal, just my two cents worth.

“if it does not fit, you must acquit”…
how about as a biathalon event with curling?
get shapers involved too. they could be the ones with the little brooms
I vote with Keith, no surfing. We all need to sport “thank you for not surfing” stickers.
i hear they are going to have skateboarding for the next olympics! i would watch that. not to interested on what they have now
how about “surfing makes you impotent”

I remember reading in one of the surfing magazines before the 2000 Olympics in Sydney that surfing was going to be included in it. Then later I heard that the idea was nixed because probably a good percentage of the competitors wouldn’t pass the drug test. Not because they’ed might be using performance enhancing drugs, but most likely they’ed test positive for Cannabis.
Then again some may argue that Cannabis is a performance enhancing drug.
They had the same problem during the winter games with the snowboarders (especially the halfpipe-boarders) Quite a few of them tested positive for cannabis and were excluded.
Rather not have surfing as an Olympic sport. It’ll only make it more popular and it is crowded enough on my local surfspot with around 150 - 200 “local” surfers and three surf-schools within 100 meters from each other.
Inappropriate,silly even!!!Surf schools? Even sillier!!!But synchronised swimming?Now there’s a real winner!!!
i say no as well to surfing in the olympics. according to one of their own rules, the international olympic committee has precluded that possibility, anyhow. i forget what the year was, but they passed a rule/bylaw/some nonsense that said no more subjective sports (sports that require judging) could be included in the games, only objective ones (fastest, highest, farthest, etc…).
a bunch of the younger kids who work at the same shop i do were yammering about this during the games. i just don’t think it makes sense & that it would continue the reduction of surfing to mere spectacle, similar to the world tour. track & field is an appropriate olympic sport. surfing is not.
Can’t remember who said it - but I remember reading that one of the reasons that surfing should not be included is that surfers should not ever march.
A good enough answer I’d say.
I personally think that there are too many subjectively judged sports in the olympics anyway - think gymnastics, synchro swimming, diving, tae kwon do…etc.
Surfing has to be judged by someone…and from what I’ve seen the, judging is highly suspect.
Speed runs. Set up GPS waypoints and judge the fastest guy from a to b. I’ve been waiting for someone to set up a contest using that tech, I think it’s only been possible for a few years right? Set up a drag strip at a first class point, shit it’s the only contest I’d be interested in watching and would seem to make sense given all the new design innovation going on now. Anyone hear of such a thing?
Not a good idea, you’ll never have waves where the olympics are held.
Just like you’ll never have wind where the olymics are.
Windsurfing on the onlympics is just ridiculous because the equipment they use (because it is made for every wind condition and everybody has to use the same). A windsurfboard is seen as a sailboat according to the IOC.
Windsurfing depends to much on the weather to be interesting for the games (look at this years sailing and windsurfing contest, it was terrible), for surfing it is even worse.
Who wants to go surfing a contest where there are no waves?
