Surfing California for the first time

well i am finally making my way to the west coast.

we are driving out on the 18th and ill be out around Sacramento until the 30th. i only have a few questions for you guys if you could so kindly answer.

#1. water temp. what suits should i bring? just the 3/2 or the 5/4/3 hooded. im definately going to bring my booties and gloves.

#2. i know im not the best surfer so i would like to start surfing over there on my most familar type of break. a beach break. somewhere where people arent packed in like sardines trying to catch waves.

#3. i am also traveling down to los angels for a a day or two so any breaks down that way would be great.

4# havent figured out how to get the board back home. its just a popout so i dont know if its worth me trying to get it back home in one piece. should i just sell it when i get out there?

i know most people hate sharing about breaks but im not asking for your secret spots just the ones all the kooks know about haha. i usually use wannasurf.com to look up breaks but i thought it would be better to ask the locals.

thanks guys cant wait to experience the west coast.

North and Central California you need a 4/3

SoCal: generally 3/2 but we are transitioning to needing less in May/June and beyond, currently temps are up to 63

and slowly tracking higher.

For traveling light, I’d take the 5/4/3 and any other summer rubber you have. Assuming you have some.

Surfing guides are money well spent for good advice.

Worth more than sticking to random internet advice.

so ill bring all my East coast winter rubber. consist of a 3/2, 3mm boots, 3mm gloves, and the 5/4/3 hooded

what’s up yamaharacer.

amount of rubber depends on how long you wanna stay in the water.

IMHO (San Francisco area): you won’t need the gloves at all. 3/2 and booties are fine if you only plan on surfing an hour

or 2 at a time. if you plan on staying in the water longer, you’ll want the 5/4/3.

my 4/3 with detachable hood and booties is fine year round and i can stay in the water up to 3 or 4

hours no problem. usually i just have the suit on, a little colder and i’ll wear the booties, colder still and

the hood is the go. waves wise, there are plenty of decent beachbreaks with little to no crowd. with

currents, sharks, and swell the way they are, sometimes a little crowd is not a bad thing. especially if

you’re not really experienced… Lindamar is an easily accesible beachbreak that a lot of beginners go to.

often it closes out or is mushy, sometimes on the north end, you can get some decent long rides. the north

end is usually less crowded and always better than the middle or south end.

call me and i can help you out more. also, what size board are you bringing? if you’re

not attached to it, and i have something that will work for you, you might as well leave it at home and borrow

one. that way you don’t have to worry about airline fees.

im used to close outs and mushy waves. they are not a problem. i wouldnt mind borrowing a board from you since im not really that attached to my canyon. im just worried about breaking it. ive taken down your number and will give you a call when i get out there. im helping my friend drive his car out to his parents new house. im sure i can get some surf in at least for a day or two
