I remember way back - early '70’s (?) - Surfer ran a shot of Joey Cabell surfing in speedos. First reaction was that it was pretty crude but then realizing that I couldn’t judge because it was a shot of one of my true surf heroes and one of the most stylish surfers of all time. I think it was a story about him paddling around one of the islands with not much besides his board and speedos looking for remote/isolated waves.
If you could surf like Joey Cabell - you can wear whatever you please…and look good doing it.
Will Katin still custom make any color/style you want? - just a thought (Are they still making baggies?)
Me, I get wax rash - no thanks on the speedo look, unless it’s the shorts, which I do use with a wetsuit.
If Kelly Slater started wearing a banana hammock everyone would too, just look at the micro shortboard trend. Maybe if they were made by Quiksilver, who knows??? They are good to prevent nut rash caused by some boardshorts.
Hi abanh, I know this is a pretty old conversation, but I just wanted to say that I started surfing in speedos for similar reasons to your own. It helped that I grew up surf lifesaving in speedos, but it’s really not a big deal. I follow the blog surfbriefs.tumblr.com that shows a lot of guys around the world surfing in speedos as well Best of luck!
I met Kimo Hollinger in 1991. He usually sported a speedo. I would usually be in a spring suit being winter in Hawaii. Our conversation in the break over decades would only be a handful of words. But the day he saw me shivering in my spring suit and him in his speedo commenting on how it was “kind of cold this morning” made me feel like the pussy I was.
