These modern boardshort designs are just too ugly for me (minus the cost). Anyone here ever surf in a plain speedo (it could help get your tan on too…)?

Other than that I simply can’t find decent boardshorts for the summer except for maybe the Hurley plain ones.
Some people have real problems.

Hahahaha nice pictures. Those patagonias aren’t too bad. but wow. $50. Maybe I’ll try them. Maybe I can still bring a speedo trend 
When I was on North Shore in early 70’s I once saw the most incredible, elegant, butter smoothe,powerful display of small wave riding by Tiger… yes, wearing a Speedo. Ever since then I have been strangely reluctant to 'dis the budgie smuggler. And I must say, with his physique, he looked pretty fine in it really, I think probably a babe magnet.

I was surfing down in Brazil on a trip once… I was surprised by how many speedos there were in the lineup. Took me by surprise seeing a grown man duckdiving in speedos. I wasn’t ready for it.
Come on man, this is a site about spending all this time building boards to our custom desires. If you don’t like what the factories are putting out in the way of boardshoarts, go get some fabric, a pattern, and stitch your own. Sorry, no reason in the modern world for a guy to wear a speedo. Plus, just think of all that additonal skin area to get rashes on.
There’s guys still wearing speedos. I don’t have the flat stomach to make it work, but I have friends who can surf very good and wear speedos every now and then. If you use grip pads, you may end up with bad rash on the inner thighs. If you want to get a better tan, wear light colored shorts. I used to wear striped shorts and I had a striped ass.
When I played water polo we always wore 2 sets of speedos.
If you are worried about UV exposure, speedos would not be a smart choice. These days long sleve tops, hats and sunglasses are popular.

I don’t know where you live, but here in Oregon I’ve scored so many good trunks at Goodwill over the years. Like new brand name stuff for @ $6.00. Stokes me up. Granted, I once wore a pair of light gray ones that turned see through when wet… Ha!

there is an old training style that is double thick and a wide leg
that has been an undershort in my kit for many years .
I replace them two at a time as the older ones wear out.
I was a store that sold this style exclusively like no lycra race suits only the tricot trainers.
All the local speedo only guys would hold me responsible when they wore out or lost their 'trunx.
these under boardshorts prevent ball slap and under a wetsuit provide an easy out rinse and dry.
You say speedos I say yes,a valid tool for the kit.

seen a bruddah get stung by a man-of-war or box jelly up there (no speedo) once at courts, wasn’t a pretty site.
the dude was hurting bad and had to go in.
Only the best and most self confident could surf in speedo’s like butch, cunningham and most of the older beach boys in waikiki.
We saw Dr Carlos Andrade (Hula Lady) stand up surfing in them at Hanalei in 2010 he had his ding cord tied around his waste.

Personally I like xcel wetsuit shorts like they used to use for canoe paddling
it keeps the salt water enema’s down when you bail off on a big one

Surfing naked "ain't no day at the beach". Talk about ball slap. Watch out for the chop. Besides, wax gets where you don't ever want it to be.
