I just booked for 2 weeks at Kamaole resort in Maui in July any advices??? I d like to surf DUMPS,It s my first time in HI , Thanks!!!
No (active) volcanoes on Maui, Haleakala last erupted just before Captain Cook (or was it George Vacouver?) visited, in the 1700s. You will see lava flows at that end of the island, and should budget 2/3 of a day to visit Haleakala. Nice drive but go early so as to avoid clouds which come up in late morning.
Lotsa other Canadians to see in the Kihei/Kamaole/Wailea area. It was referred to as "Canadian Heaven" for a time. You may already know that.
As noted, may be very little surf but there is great snorkeling and clear water generally (unless after a rain). Be aware that if a shark appears, best to be elswhere already. There was an attack in the area a year or two ago. Might have been fatal, can't remember.
Dumps is a great wave, but if it’s on,it’s crowded, and the lava is unforgiving.Summer is not so good on Maui for waves, too much island blocking from all the other islands on south swells, unlike winter. So if Dumps is good, it is very competitive, one of the few places to shortboard.Lots of mellower spots to longboard.Have fun.
Thanks Kava I m going there on a family vacation with my two sons(11n9)and wife So we want to visit ,snorkling.,boogie, zoo, volcano nnnnnnnn longboarding thanks again! see you in water?
Lots of snorkling, boogie, volcano etc. No zoo that I know of. Aquarium maybe? Surf? Not likly. Mauis' summer swells(plural: because sometimes there are more than one.) usually occur in Spring or late fall and last a maximum of three days. Almost never in the Summer. A nice 4-6' swell can be running on Oahu and it's six inches in Kihei. If you happen to be there and a decent south swell comes in you'd better be prepared to drop whatever you are doing and get to the beach. If you see it breaking in the morning and think: I'll go surfing after the wife, kids and I do the hike to whatchmacallit falls. Forget about it! The swell will be gone by the time you get around to it.
hey canadian - you will love maui! i was born there (but raised on the east coast) and i have been back a few times. there are some really really fun waves on the stretch of coast from maaleaa bay up through lahaina. you will see most of them from the road and there doesnt need to be much swell at all if you like to ride longboards. right in lahaina town are some really great waves - make sure to sniff around the south and north side of town. my wife’s favorite surf spot in the whole world is launiupoko beach park just south of lahaina - great family spot. dumps (and la perouse) and maaleaa dont break very often but are amazing when they do - definately for experienced surfers only!
honolua bay wont be breaking but it is a spectacular place to snorkel in the summer. there is an access down in the valley before you go up on the overlooking cliff. you will have to walk through the jungle for a while before you come to the very inside of the bay - you can swim out to the reef from there. or you can go park up at the cliffs and climb down.
you should cruise up to ho’okipa beach park on the north side to watch (and mabe try?) some windsurfing/kiteboarding. There is always a rideable tradewind swell here and at some other spots on this stretch of coast.
i miss hawaii…
actually if you are a decent surfer, you can score some great waves on Maui in summer, especially if the swell angles are good. It is often windy though, but some spots are sheltered, especially early in the day,Dumps is one of them. Anyways,no zoo with animals here, only with humans. The aquarium is very popular.we can hookup for a surf.Aloha.Grasshopper,your blog is good.Aloha
