I am heading to Melbourne, Vic. Aus. in January and i was wondering if anyone has been to the area and knows the best places close by. I know bells and those places are like at least an hour drive from melbourne and i was wondering if there was any quality surf closer, i am a student so i wont have a car or anything.
As you may know melbourne itself doesn’t get swell, however there are much closer options then bells…But I do recomend the Torquay area, even if theres no swell (often in summer) its a great place for a surfer to be, the history of surfing there is great… and Bells is beutifal.
Back on topic theres spots like portsea &the first surfing wave on the mornungton is a fickle spot calledbalnarring point…
Go explore Vicco there plenty of Great, uncrowded waves.
BTW… I’m not an expert on vicco but this info might help…
Try Speedneedle i think he lives in vicco? Doesn’t he?
You could try Phillip Island, the transport systems over there are quite good. If you are a student of any college or on a pension you might get a discount on fares too.
Go for a trip down the Great Ocean Road, spectacular stuff.
I live in Melbourne, There’s nothing really close and easy by public transport. If you have a car and don’t mind long drives, you’re guaranteed to score quality waves 3 days out of a week. In January, Phillip island is going to be your best bet, You could probably get a bus there, try to get somewhere to stay at Woolamai. You might get Torquay on, but it’s inconsistant in summer. Check www.wannasurf.com
Catch a train to Dandenong, then a bus to Phillip Island. Worth every effort if their is any sort of swell. Not as crowded as west coast, and lots more waves over summer.
If you get Woolamai on you will get this and more…
I live in the south eastern suburbs of melbourne and surf mostly every weekend with a few mates. As already mentioned by Pinhead, Torquay is not your best bet over summer (apart from perhaps 13th Beach). Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula are both about an hour away by car and both have great waves (it doesn’t often drop under about 3’). If you want to catch up when you get here for more info just post a reply to that effect and I will email you directly. We nearly always have room in the car for one more on most trips.
Nice, thanks everyone for the info, i am pumped to get down there for some surf, living in the northeast US in the winter can be pretty rough surfing wise, so it will be nice to get out of here for a while, RDM i will definitly get in contact with you once it gets closer to january.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen that done. Local council wouldn’t tolerate that sort of thing anymore I wouldn’t think. Nearest campsites would now be San Remo or Rhyll. It will be pretty busy at that time of year (where on the coast isn’t though these days).
yeh I thought that would be the case…I’ve got a mate who lives at Mt Martha so I can stay there some of the time…got to get out of Sydney if it is going to be like last summer…dead flat for six weeks!
It is well worth a day or two driving down to the surf coast and experiencing the surf mania. Surf city comprises of something like 30 surf factory outlets and retail shops, but also base to some of the big brands. That alone is worth taking a day for!
The surf is pretty easyily accessable around there, and there is big variety in waves.
