Just opening this up for discussion, curious to hear what others think.
Surfing, to me, has always been about enjoying nature, the quiet and peaceful roar of the ocean waves, the mist in your face as you paddle over a frothing wave on an offshore day, the pleasant surprise of a nearby seal surfacing, the power of a surfing dolphin who takes over the lineup and no one argues, the curious look from a nearby seagull, the crunch of seaweed and wet sand underfoot... I could go on and on.
In my world, there is no need for jet engines on a surfboard, or motorized jet skis pulling surfers in the lineup. Which is not to say I view technology as bad - I do like warm wetsuits, good resin, a car that gets me to the beach, etc. Just saying, when surfing - once I leave the security of the shore and solid ground - I like being a part of the natural world of the ocean without internal combustion engines, or battery powered jets.
Not hating on anyone, and nothing but respect for men who ride giant waves miles offshore that couldn't even be caught without a jet ski. And motorized rescue vehicles saving lives - yes! Just saying, it would be sad (to me) if motorized technology took over the lineup. That would never happen - would it?
For every one jetski in the line up, there are two thousand SUPs in the lineup. Jetskis are by law regulated in most instances. The funny thing about your above statement is that I find being way off shore on a jet ski surfing, with the ski behind the wave, I don't even hear it.. I am always in awe of how quiet it is and how noisy a humback's blow hole breath is. How smelly a sea turles breath is. How pristine the water is. The dolphin pod making its 8 am run east bound seen off the west shore. The flying fish going 20 mph. You don't even know what you don't know when surfing is a parking lot and a 5 minute paddle.to the break.
The wavejet surfboard will be no worse than the longboarder to the shortboarder, The SUP still is the top of the pecking order for getting in early and often. I have to stay one thousand feet away from all surfers(paddle, wave jet, SUPs) with my jetski. Have to have a open water training certificate and tow sticker. I follow the rules. I am the least of your problems.
I also like the peace and quiet its my time out to relax and enjoy the ocean
Got run over once by the lifegaurds inflateable get a bit wary every time I hear it moveing about.
Theres hardly any sups around here when they do come out they tend to surf a different part of the beach.
Interesting about the ski rules that sort of thing is very relaxed here no registration, courses or insurance for boats. Just some basics about speed within certain distance of moored vessels and the coast.
Reminds me of the signs I see posted every now and again with all the beach rules and hours they are open
