Surfmat and heat

anyone leave their mat in their car? If so what do you do to protect it from the heat. i was thinking rolling it in a dry towel to insulate it.

sometimes i want to ride a board, but take the mat along in case conditions would be better for the mat. so far i’ve been lucky; if i go on the board ,there’s usually someone hangin out by the car, or will carry it on the beach. but sometimes I/ll be alone, and only real choice would be lock away in the car. dont wanna kill the mat with heat tho.

ideas?

Thanks

I had the same concerns. I spent a year and a half having to go someplace hot once a week, and it wasn’t the best area, so I left the mat home…and missed some good surf on the drive home when it was light enough. I think the insulating idea is good. You can actually test it using the bag the mat came in. I put a towel folded up on the floor of the back seat, set the mat on it, and cover again with towels. When you test it check periodically and see how hot it gets at different times of day. Towels or some kind of blanket don’t weight much. Potential drawbacks are if you surf with others who might step on it getting into or out of the car, a total bad idea. Of course the heat difference between Southern California and your territory are sometimes pretty big…hence the test first.

Inflate the mat when you’re ready ready to ride it, like when your feet are in the water. Leave the mat in the car un-inflated.

Did I understand the concern correctly?

No, the concern is about the heat possibly damaging or weakening the welds, or the fabric - sitting in the car, windows closed. Can’t leave it out like you can a board.

mine stays in my truck cab all the time.no issues yet.i did, however, have a valve stem melt-down in hot weather.the mat was inflated and the extreme heat-117 degrees ended up melting the valve stem. dale is replacing it with new, update type of system.

how about an ice-chest? igloo cooler? without ice…

just throwing out ideas

hey that aint such a bad idea.

Again I would test it first before using the real thing. Easy enough to do. Certainly would provide protection. I’d just worry about if it would turn into an easy-bake oven…I swear I remember rather warm cans in a watery ignored ice chest but it is possible it was on a desert camping trip.
